Andy Budd set one of Andy Budd's replies as an official response to "Exporting video takes a long time" in Clearleft
Andy Budd replied on April 07, 2009 10:34 to the problem "Exporting video takes a long time" in Clearleft:
Hey Guys,
We've improved memory handling and multi-threading which has helped speed up exports by around 20%. We'll continue to try and tweak performance as we go along, but this is a good start.
That being said, video encoding and export is extreamly processor intensive so so it's unlikely that we'll see realtime exporting without hardware changes. So our goal is 2-3x realtime which is standard for most video applications.

Hi Rui,
Are these freezes happening on a regular/predictable basis or are they more random? It would be extremely helpful if you could send the crash reports over. You can find them Library > Logs > Crash Reporter.
To tell how much resources the app is using, if you could open up the terminal application and type the command "top" while the application is running, you'll be given a complete profile of your machine. If you could save the results and send those as well, that would help. My email address is andy@clearleft.com.
Video capture is actually quite memory intensive so my suspicion is that Silverback is running out of memory. However 1.5GB should be OK (what version of the OS are you using and what processor?) so we may need to tighten up the memory handling some more.

Hi Vladimir,
Really sorry to hear you've been having problems with Silverback. It sounds like you could be having memory problems leading to data corruption so can you let me know how much memory you have installed on your machine?
Could you open up your terminal, type "top" and then send me the results.
Thx

Sorry Rui, it seems the notification for this question got caught in our spam filters. While we do have a few instances of issues during export, this is the first one we've had during capture. Can you let me know how much RAM your machine has, how much RAM Silverback was using before it crashed and what other applications you had open.

Hi Kit,
Unfortunately we do have a memory bug that is affection a small number of users. We're currently doing our best to locate and fix this bug, so hope to have more information soon. In the meantime, if you are experiencing problems exporting a particular session, please keep trying as they will usually export after a couple of attempts.
