Well shoot Argonautz, :( I am still able to watch Netflix after using my last solution, ie; deleting the registry key as Microsoft suggested.
You could always just call Microsoft, as the last time I checked they were providing FREE technical support for un-install, install issues with Silverlight. (Only free for Silverlight.)
Also, as a work around for now, you could use Google Chrome to watch Netflix. It still uses Silverlight but it worked when IE would not.
I installed Chrome a few months ago and now I use it instead of IE for everything except online banking. It's so user friendly, clean, fast..It's just a wonderful web-browser. (The latest version of IE; 8, doesn't thrill me. )

Hi, Mine was already enabled. But I'm having the same problem I did before my previous posted "solution".
But now Microsoft is showing how to delete a registry key that causes install/uninstall problems. Not for the faint of heart, playing with the registry,,, but here is the link for anyone who wants to give it a try.

Re-hi, Well I am going to answer my/your question because this is the first time I have found something that's worked! I can now watch Netflix on IE! Maybe it will work for you?
When I went to this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/...
(that's silverlight-slash-overview-slash-top-features/defaults.aspx. Meaning I didn't install from the Netflix website.
and clicked on the first image (top, left) that says "better streaming" it gives you an option to Install Silverlight. I thought "Oh, what the heck". Lo and behold it actually installed! With NO error messages saying it was already installed. And I didn't have to un-install it before I could re-install it!
That's really weird because 2 hours before this I tried to use it on the Netflix site and I got that error message about needing to install it.....again.

I'm going to answer my own question because I found another thread with this same problem somewhere else on this site.
When I went to this site: http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/...
and clicked on the first image for "better steaming" it gave me the option to Install Silverlight, and low and behold it did it!

I just posted the same question. I had to call Microsoft to have bits of the Silverlight program in the registry removed before it could be reinstalled.. Using Uninstall programs and Windows cleanup wasn't enough.
Unfortunately the problem is back again a week later.
There has to be a lot of users with this same problem. I use IE8 on Windows XP.
I did find that I could watch Netflix in Chrome though, without Silverlight error! You could try that.
AngelaS asked a question in Microsoft Corporation on September 04, 2009 03:05:
Using XP, and IE, why do I get "Intsall Silverlight", when it's already installed?Silverlight is installed for use with Netflix on Windows XP, using IE version 8. But Netflix tells me to install it anyway. When I try to install it again, Silverlight says I need to un-install first.
I used Uninstall programs and and Windows Installer Cleanup to un-install. But when I try to reinstall Silverlight, it tells me it's already installed.
I was on the phone for over an hour with Microsoft and they removed what was left in the registry. It worked for a week or so and now the same thing is happening again.
Now I have to use Chrome to watch Netflix.
I have a new Macbook Pro but I am afraid to install this program on it!
Please help!
