Thank you very much for your help.
To maintain the same location, that is why I plug the external harddrive into the same usb port each time. Also, I don't receive that error message, the song just stays at 0:00. Am I supposed to?
Lastly, this is a laptop, and it would be quite troublesome to unplug each time (likewise with continuously uploading new tracks).
However, even when I freshly scan new tracks that should be able to play, a number of them don't. Does songbird play files that are m4a unprotected? I have a number of old cds that I saved to itunes a while ago, so they were converted to that format.

Thanks for your prompt response. I connect via USB, always through the same port.
What I typically do is attach my external hard drive to the same port when I turn on my computer, and then open the files which I have previously imported from the same location. For some reason some tracks work, and others don't. I know it's songbird, because I do the same thing to access my songs on Amarok. Maybe I need to do something differently?
What is an SMB drive?

Songs dont play from external HarddriveLet me say first, I love the idea of songbird. However I have had it for months now, and I have been waiting for an update to solve the problem, but nothing has been released. Also, from what I have seen from notes of future updates, there is little if nothing to address it.
I have an external hard drive with about 7k songs. The ONLY qualm I have with songbird is that its a pain because sometimes a song will play, yet most of the time it wont. On Amarok, all the songs work fine, yet I would prefer to use Songbird.
I have tried before to solve this problem by searching through similar reports on this problem, yet not of the solutions which were given really worked.
Please help me to fix this problem, or introduce an update that does, because I think songbird is a wonderful program, and I would love to use it if I could.
(In short, I have an external hard drive, the music from it doesn't consistently play on songbird, and hasn't for months. I use Ubuntu Linux 8.10.)

Preference menu changehey, I love songbird. The problem currently though is that my preferences menu just altered its format to something i can't stand. I was wondering how I can edit it, and/or put it back to normal. Thank you.
