Not sure if it was readding the contact or typing "on" in the chat window that did it. It's working now; if it breaks again I'll update the case. Thanks for the help! – astralbodies, on May 13, 2008 17:57

astralbodies -- I just remembered something else we haven't tried yet... could you kindly try logging into Gtalk, removing the Twitter bot from your GTalk contact list, then adding it back?
Someone else did this before and it worked for them.

Looks like if I go offline, I do actually go offline. So I'm not sure what's up. – astralbodies, on May 13, 2008 17:29

I know I'm not actively logged into GTalk in more than one place but you never know if I have an orphaned session out there. I'll try testing that theory out with having a friend tell me if I'm offline or not. :) – astralbodies, on May 13, 2008 17:19

astralbodies, the only other explanation I can think of right now is that you're logged into im from more than one application or machine.
The former (being logged into more than one chat application) sometimes happens to me when I'm logged in to IM via a Jabber client (like Psi, for example) and then I login to Gmail before logging out of Psi.
Twitter doesn't seem to 'see' that I'm now logged into Gmail and it continues to send im tweets to Psi while my Gtalk chat window remains empty. I only realize it later, when I finally log out of Gtalk only to see that my Psi chat window is still open and filled with tweets I hadn't seen.
There are also times when Twitter seems to see both Gtalk and Psi, but doesn't know where to send the tweets, so both get them but only intermittently.
The solution (if this is indeed the problem) is to log out of chat completely from all applications and all machines, and then log back in to only one.
(I don't know if that's the cause of your problem, though. And if this isn't it, then I'm afraid I'm stumped.)

No problem. I have my device updates set to "im" on the front page. And I do have device notifications set to "on" for a number of contacts. It's good to make sure all the bases are covered. – astralbodies, on May 13, 2008 16:22

astralbodies, at the risk of asking silly questions...
1. Do you have IM selected in your home page sidebar? See http://twitter.com/home to check your current setting. I think you won't receive anything in IM if your sidebar is set to sms or web-only.
2. Do you have device updates set to ON for any of the people that you're following? Twitter will only send you updates via IM from people for whom you've set device notifications to ON. When we first follow people, device notifications default to OFF. See http://twitter.com/friends to check.

I am using a standard Google account for the IM "link". – astralbodies, on May 13, 2008 15:00

Are you by any chance using your own Google Custom Domain? If yes, there are additional configuration steps required. You'll find that in this separate Satisfaction thread.
