R.M. 'Auros' Harman marked one of William Shipley's replies in Delicious Monster as useful. William Shipley replied to the problem "iSight hangs Delicious Library 2".
R.M. 'Auros' Harman replied on November 01, 2009 22:45 to the idea "DL2 on iPhone" in Delicious Monster:
Yeah, my copy of the iPhone app still seems to be able to pull data off my computer. Though it takes at least five minutes, which is annoying. I submitted a fix-request a while back to have the sync process only send the delta, rather than re-sending the entire library every time.
Regarding the text-file batch import concept -- if you have a barcode scanner that can record to a text file, you can, at least, copy-paste each ID number (ISBN, or other identifier if you're scanning CDs, DVDs, etc) into the add-item dialog. But I agree, it would be more useful to be able to import a bunch at once.
Of course, if you don't have a barcode scanner, and want this functionality, you could buy the one that Delicious Monster recommends, which works over bluetooth. If you're out of range of the computer while scanning, it stores up a buffer of IDs, and sends them all at once as soon as it's in range again.

R.M. 'Auros' Harman replied on October 27, 2009 21:53 to the question "Barcode scanner hangs on Snow Leopard?" in Delicious Monster:
Hmm, there seem to be a bunch of different threads on this topic, which should probably be merged... Offhand, I can find this one, plus:

In one of those threads, a workaround was discovered for scanning whille in List view -- if you manually add a new item using an ISBN (even a duplicate of an existing item), and then delete that item again, you will then be able to activate the iSight for scanning. (This solution worked for me.)

R.M. 'Auros' Harman replied on October 27, 2009 20:50 to the problem "Delicious Library's bug reporter assumes that I'm using Mail.app." in Delicious Monster:
I was just noting in the notes for the new version about using the "default mail app".
Why not just submit crash data and feedback directly to a database using an HTTP POST? I don't use a local mail app on my computer at all -- I either use a mail app inside a browser, or in a terminal window. (You can have my PINE when you pry it from my cold dead hands.) Skipping the mail app entirely seems like it would greatly simplify the process of submission.
I think my crashes have all been getting submitted to Apple, but not DM, because the OS has a feature where it pops up a window that sends along crash data, and asks for any comments on what you were doing when things went wrong. This seems like the correct paradigm for that feature.
R.M. 'Auros' Harman replied on September 29, 2009 23:02 to the question "Barcode scanner hangs on Snow Leopard?" in Delicious Monster:
I have this problem too -- though, weirdly, it only happens most of the time. If I'm feeling persistent, and I want to Force Quit and re-open DM a few times, sometimes I can get the scanner to work. (Then after I scan a few things, DM will give me the message about how it's become unstable and may not be able to save recent changes. If I quit and re-open then, it always does seem to have successfully saved my entries.) I think re-booting may improve the odds of having the scanner come up successfully, though it's hard to tell.
Anyways, I'm glad to hear a Snow Leopard / OSX 10.6 patch is forthcoming.-

R.M. 'Auros' Harman replied on July 08, 2009 06:59 to the question "iPhone sync -- just do the delta, not the whole library!" in Delicious Monster:
Uh, I don't know precisely. Maybe five or six minutes? It's not like it takes hours, but it's still a nuisance. It takes longer to sync library than it takes to sync every other feature of the phone (calendar, contacts, etc).
(I suppose I could also submit as a suggestion: Figure out how to make the library sync along with other apps, through iTunes. But if I was going to do that, I should probably open a separate thread, huh?)
R.M. 'Auros' Harman asked a question in Delicious Monster on July 04, 2009 00:53:
iPhone sync -- just do the delta, not the whole library!I love the new iPhone app, but I have one complaint: with nearly 2,000 items in my library, it takes a LONG time to pack up and transfer the library to my phone. I was expecting that the first time, but EVERY time I sync, it has to completely pack up the library and transfer it. It should really only have to transfer new/changed items.
I had time to write this whole post while it was syncing!
A comment on the question "New version v. old" in Delicious Monster:
May I make a few respectful suggestions, as somebody who spent 6.5 years working at the interface between usability studies and the technical details of software architecture?
Re: #3, I would consider it a reasonably high priority to get this done; taking away a future that people had been using, without providing an obvious replacement, is just never a good idea. I know we can get similar functionality by adding Creation Date to the columns in the detailed view of the collection, but the Recent Imports shelf was still useful.
Similarly, #4 seems to be a "restore old functionality" issue.
#5 seems like something that would ideally be configurable, similar to how one can configure the Mac Dock or Windows Taskbar to appear in different places around the edge of the screen. (I know that making such things configurable is always harder in practice than it sounds in theory, but still, it'd be nice.)
Re: #6, again, I thought in v1 we could use drag/drop or copy/paste onto the large cover space in the details pane, rather than just into the shelving. – R.M. 'Auros' Harman, on January 21, 2009 23:21
William Shipley's reply to "DL2 on iPhone" was just promoted to the most useful! R.M. 'Auros' Harman and 2 other people think it's one of the best replies.
I'm currently mapping out what iPhone client(s) would look like - I agree they'd be totally fun. But, there's also issues to overcome:
One problem with any potential DL2 viewer is that there are people out there with 5,000-item collections, and they're going to be ticked off if it takes a half-hour to load them on their iPhone, or if it scrolls too slow, or if it sucks up all their iPhone's memory and crashes.
And, thanks to the iPhone 2.0's semi-broken SDK, there is NO way to download data directly from your Mac to your iPhone, or send any data back to your Mac! So, you'd have to post your collection to some website, or we'd have to use the wireless network, or something.
Finally, the iPhone 2.0 SDK doesn't allow us access to the video camera, so I can't implement my video barcode scanner. I *may* be able to get something working with still images, but the iPhone camera also does not focus, and the iPhone doesn't have AltiVec or SSE3 like we use to process blurry barcodes on Macs.
Not to say I don't want to do it, but there are significant hurdles. I want to make sure I do something that's actually useful. Also, right now I owe it to my DL2 customers to fix the nits they've found in the 2.0 version, since they gave me their money and stuff.
