avp2 reported a problem in The Infinite Kind on January 18, 2009 22:23:
Category Subtotal WrongIn the edit categories list window, a parent expense category shows a greater total (about 1/3 more) than the sum of its own register and its (single) child register. Any way to troubleshoot, and/or fix, this would be nice. I am running 2008r3 (631) on mac OS X 4.11.

If the batch change category (and accounts) function worked properly in a category register window, you could do it with one operation. Unfortunately, there is a bug in that the "batch change" account and category functions are reversed.
If you could select a category in "batch change account", you could (at least) work around the bug, but no.
The "category" column should also be labeled "account" for category register windows as that is what actually shows in that field.

My guess is the least bothersome is to manually enter transfers into the originating account before downloading so that MD can match them, i.e. rather than trying to get MD to enter them automatically from the download/s. Otherwise, MD probably will (I have not tried it) just enter two separate transactions and you would have to go to the originating one, edit it to a "trn" status and then delete the download entered transaction from the receiving account (the "trn" change would create a new duplicate).

I have had "Little Snitch" installed (in my Mac) all the time I have had MD (last ~6 mo) and it has never shown any connections other than for Yahoo finance (I have the stock quote and currency exchange updaters installed) and moneydance.com (for update checking). So far, MD's network activity seems what I would expect.
My firewall is full on so I don't get anything I have not asked for and MD has not done any com I did not set it to initiate.
avp2 replied on January 07, 2009 01:41 to the question "Transaction Reminder Setup Questions (or Issues)" in The Infinite Kind:
You can make a transaction type reminder for on-line payments, but it will not automatically generate an on-line payment. If you click "record", it will enter it in the register, but not send it to your bank. If you click "defer", it will simply do nothing and leave the reminder as is. If you click "skip", it will reset the reminder to the next "due" date and not record any transaction. When I started using MD, I set up my on-line bill pay reminders as transaction. Then, I discovered I had to manually enter them anyway so started just clicking "skip". Lately, I have taken to making them general type as less confusing.
Yes, transactions with print check status (in the check # field) at the time you do a "print checks" command will be sent to the printer. However, the transaction date in the account register, and on the associated check, will be the same and that of a reminder date if the transaction was enter automatically by auto-commit.
If you set auto-commit for X days ahead of the reminder date, the auto-entry will simply happen X days earlier, but the transaction/check date is still the reminder date.
avp2 replied on January 06, 2009 05:07 to the question "How do I get MoneyDance to download old transactions from bank?" in The Infinite Kind:
I think direct connect will only download data from the current statement period or whatever MD recognizes as not previously downloaded.
Since most institutions will allow you to download past statement periods, probably the best way to get around this is to get the data you want that way.
You might also be able to get previously direct connect gathered data by clicking reset sync in on-line setup, It is supposed to reset the date of the last direct connect download, but I have not tried it and have not seen much info on it.
avp2 replied on January 06, 2009 04:29 to the question "How to do year end closure in MoneyDance?" in The Infinite Kind:
I have not tried it yet (will be shortly), but doing an "archive" (in file menu) is supposed to create a db copy with only those transactions up to a specified date and leave the open db with only transactions after the specified date only and "balance forward" account amounts for those transactions deleted (archived). Category balances are supposed to not be carried forward from the deleted/archived transactions. I assume Investments would be treated similarly to other accounts and transactions before to the "archive date" would be summed and carried forward.
There is some info on this in the MD Help file under "Archive".

avp2 replied on January 06, 2009 04:01 to the question "Does MoneyDance support ING accounts?" in The Infinite Kind:
If you are talking about INGdirect USA (apparently, they are operationally pretty independent from country to country), I want to know what OFX settings you use so that I can setup my accounts for direct connect too; I also have to use web download/import.
ING got me when they bought NetBank in 2007. During the transition period, I could direct connect via the NetBank servers. However, that service was shut down around the end of the year and my emails urging them to continue direct connect have, so far, been fruitless. My last reply from INGdirect USA (about mid 2008) said they had no plans to reinstate direct connect service.-

avp2 replied on January 06, 2009 03:34 to the question "Transaction Reminder Setup Questions (or Issues)" in The Infinite Kind:
Checking "commit" will cause the transaction to automatically be entered on the reminder date, or the specified number of days before that date.
There is currently no status item for an on-line bill pay. And a reminder transaction for an on-line transaction will only be entered into a specified register as if it was a normal manual transaction, i.e. it will not be sent to an "on-line" institution set up on the account. You always have to due a "new bill pay" to get such transactions sent. If you "commit", or click the "record" button, of such a reminder transaction and then do an on-line payment, you end up with both in your account and have to delete the one entered by the reminder. For that reason, I set my on-line bill pay reminders to be the "general" type. I, and others, have also asked for the addition of an on-line transaction status flag and reminder entry.
Your bank should have all your on-line payee, and pending payment, data in their servers. And, it should be read by MD when you connect so that don't have to re-enter it from Quicken.
avp2 replied on January 06, 2009 03:17 to the question "Can't download from Discover" in The Infinite Kind:
I just did a direct connect download for my Discover card and it worked fine (as usual) so the only thing I can think of for your problem is that your "on-line" (OFX) data has gotten scrambled or something has gone wrong with your account. You may want to try running through the on-line connection wizard again. You will need to call Discover to fix your on-line access.
I just pulled this contact info from my Discover account page so their site works for me.

avp2 shared an idea in The Infinite Kind on January 06, 2009 02:53:
Investment Account AdditionsInvestment accounts need a "Shares in" function and a way to manually set/edit the current cost basis (overriding previous purchases) of an account item. Shares in is needed to allow an initial input or transfer. And, it would be really handy to be able to correct cost basis as, with time, it is very easy for the built-in purchase cost basis to become wrong.
avp2 shared an idea in The Infinite Kind on January 06, 2009 02:49:
Bank Account AdditionAdd a "Roth" option for Bank account CD's that provides cost basis tracking (for tax purposes). This would avoid the loss of OFX update caused by using an Investment account CD to gain the needed cost basis tracking. Most Roth CD's are held at banks anyway. While Bank account CD cost basis can now be tracked over a financial period (between closings), balance forward (such as with accounts) is really what is needed.
