In regards to the actual appearance of the 'Songbird Uber EQ', a design not unlike this Soundtrack Pro plug-in ( a practical, form-follows-function approach with subdued skin), combes to mind.
And, yes, I do know that the example of design sited is NOT an EQ.
I'm simply providing an example of a carefully and thoughtfully planned GUI.

Songbird Uber EQ (User Modifiable EQ+Parametric EQ with Selectable Sub-Sonic and Ultra-Sonic Filters)(excerpt from posts in Songbird Roadmap):
Songbird Uber EQ
Presently, I use BS.player, and its implementation of a modifiable EQ is excellent--it allows you to enter the EXACT frequencies you desire for each band, for an innumerable (user determined) number of audio frequency bands. It's a dream come true. The only way BS.player could possibly improve on this would be to implement an option to use an (individually switchable) 3-channel bank of Parametric EQ (to be used concurrently with, or alternately to, the customizable graphic EQ). Add user selectable sub-sonic and ultra-sonic filters. Include a flash quickstart introduction on EQ, and you have the perfect music EQ platform. (I would love to see an audio Real Time Analyzer also implemented, but most would consider that over-kill [though it's not, given that it helps the user eliminate 'room-modes' in their particular room set-up].)
Why the obsession with a user modifiable EQ, you ask?
It's all about the music--at the end of the day, Songbird, like other media managers, is first and foremost about the music--if tools properly implemented in the media manager can provide the perfect audio environment, the user will in no way continue 'searching for the ideal/ultimate/perfect/(other) media player/manager'.
Video is a nice feature, but still secondary in importance in a society where most people are constantly on the move. Whether a media player/manager can allow you to surf the web, plan your appointment, double as an alternative to One Note, or perform other innumerable (and sometimes duplicated services) is not all that important (not to mention the tendency for programmers to succumb to 'featuritis').
In the end (as was the intention in the beginning), it's first and foremost about the music.
BTW, the EQ GUI in some of the top DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) programs are beautiful and should be considered when designing the customizable EQ for Songbird, particularly as it pertains to the 3-band Parametric EQ. (Yes, I HAVE to try to push that function. LOL. Think about it--Songbird may become not only the best, but also the most recognizable media player due in great part by implementing EQ at a level never before achieved for its target audience. Songbird may become the defacto media player due to that one achievement alone. Impressive.)
And, yes, that last comment is a further attempt to selling that particular function. LOL.
Of course, adding SRS or similar user selectable audio enhancement would be the icing on the cake.
Songbird = fly. cool. uber cool. frakking cool. a programming medley of musical awesomeness. (Provided that Sorting Improvements, Normalization, User Modifiable EQ+Parametric EQ with Selectable Sub-Sonic and Ultra-Sonic Filters are all implemented.)
Yes--I'm selling the ultimate 'User Modifiable EQ+Parametric EQ with Selectable Sub-Sonic and Ultra-Sonic Filters' idea in all posts relative. LOL.
