joe12, using wuala is easy - I agree. But ++understanding++ wuala is difficult. Or better said, it is not presented well.
When it comes to usability, the "product" has to fit itself to the user. Wuala does this in almost every aspect, except when it comes to communicating the trading of storage.
Bugreport, EXCELLENT. Yes, this is what I was referring to in my previous message. Some sort of visual representation which makes it almost intuitive. All it takes is just a glance, not having to work through an algorithm.
ps instead of jpg use png or gif

nmat, thanks - ok, look I'm not dumb, nor are other potential wuala users but here's the thing... and I hope that someone with authority from wuala is listening because this is important for their success:
you have to communicate better.
People are busy, they already have complicated lives. Telling them to RTFM isn't good enough! Find a way to explain things. What you are doing now isn't working.
Use a flow chart, diagram, cartoon, pictures, symbolism, etc. whatever it takes but improve your communication.
I like wuala. I want to support you. So take this as it is intended and use it for your benefit.
cheers

Babak asked a question in Wuala on September 03, 2008 05:30:
How much storage? - use small words pleaseok, would someone please explain in simple terms how much storage I can have with wuala?
I've read this:
http://wua.la/en/storage/trade
but then what is this thing about "atleast 10% of the limit"?
I just want to know how much storage I can have, is there a way for me to calculate or estimate this? is there a formula? an equation? an algorithm? quantum mechanics? string theory? halp.
also, does "locally stored data" refer to data that other people have stored on my HD or data that I have uploaded and stored on wuala's p2p cloud?
thank you!!

I was uploading a regularly-available game patch, almost 300mb worth, and I'm surprised that the status icon turned into a green check after mere seconds. And I don't think it's uploading the file at all in my computer. I checked the web interface and indeed the file is there, and am able to download through the web even.
Is this some kind of voodoo magic or am I right in saying that if other Dropbox users have the 'exact same file' as you, it would merely use the file already in the cloud?

Yes Alvin,
DropBox is a single instance file store.

That's certainly interesting, although I can only imagine how they do it.
Maybe it's like this, the local Dropbox client in my computer making CRC/hash check thingies to the file, and then uploading that info to the cloud. If there is an exact match of the file elsewhere in Dropbox, it would not upload the local file anymore and merely refer to that file already online in the cloud. If the file is deemed completely unique, it would be uploaded as normal.
Very useful, it saved me valuable time.

Yes I imagine the process would be cool to know. A standard 32 bit crc is way too small a range of possibilities to use in this case, different data WILL generate the same crc. CRCs are good for network error detection though because the likelyhood that noise on the network corrupted your data and the crc in such a way that they still match is incredibly small, and the chance of either getting changed alone in such a way that they still match extremely unlikely too. But with 32 bits there are only 4.295 billion combinations. Most hashing methods are considerably more complex than a simple crc, and they are using sha256. IPv6 using 128 binary bits yields something like 3.7x10^34 possible combinations, I shudder to think how many you get with SHA256.

Hi Michael!
Look into the forum. They already told which hash system they are using. The possibility of a similar code for different files is - according to their statement - extremly low.

Hey Michael V.
I know they are using sha256, and my post includes that, but that is just the hash. Their database backend would be very interesting to look at, it has to track the hashes for the files, the user accounts where the file exists, etc. It is the whole process that interests me, not just the individual pieces.

Babak replied on August 29, 2008 17:51 to the question "editing the drop widget" in drop.io:
Peter, thanks for your reply. Yes, I would definitely prefer to keep this information private. As well, it clutters the interface up for the user. There is no utility for the user to know how many files others have uploaded to me or how much storage is used/available. I would like for them to just upload files.
So PLEASE give us this option, or make it a default to NOT show this option.
Thank you.
Babak asked a question in drop.io on August 28, 2008 02:26:
editing the drop widgetI'd like to be able to edit the widget's look, size, and styling. For example, remove the mention of how many files have been uploaded and what capacity has been used.
"0 file added, o of 100 MB used"

Babak replied on August 27, 2008 06:52 to the question "why do RSS feeds have an pressflip login at the top?" in PressFlip:
perhaps I am rushing Kyle, but the way I approach pressflip, as a user is this:
I login and monitor the results and maybe add/edit some keywords for new or existing searches. if I see something that doesn't fit, I "flip" it - btw, from a useabilty pov, "flip" is confusing - a red X would be unmistakeable.
I use the feed to save time. If I start seeing that a lot of "bad" results are coming in, I log in and edit/erase results and keywords as necessary to improve things.
My point is that the RSS feed is to get results, interacting with the app is done while logged in. I don't want to constantly see a pressflip header on RSS links nor to have them show up when I fwd or show the feed to others.
perhaps there is a way to give the user the ability to turn this feature on/off and so, not append the pressflip link ahead of the actual link.
great product btw, I'm really enjoying playing with it and starting to get a handle on how to tweak the results. I don't think I've used it enough for it to "learn" or at least not visibly so, but I look forward to that.
:-)
Babak replied on August 27, 2008 06:37 to the question "why do RSS feeds have an pressflip login at the top?" in PressFlip:
thanks for the response Kyle, problem is that the RSS results look like this:
http:// PRESSFLIP .... LINK
so if I include it in an aggregator feed, and someone else looks at it, they will see the pressflip header/login
there is zero functionality to this design, except to advertise pressflip, please eliminate the appending of pressflip to rss feed results
thank you

Babak asked a question in Wuala on August 25, 2008 04:56:
so the amount of space depends on what?So... the amount of space available for me to use when I'm "trading" depends on not just how much I'm "active", not just how much of my HD I'm sharing... but how much "stuff" is actually stored by others on my HD?
So when, for whatever reason, "they" use less... I'm going to find myself in deep doo-doo.
Imagine I've got enough on my HD to upload and backup 10 GB of data. Let's then assume for whatever reason, that all of a sudden, 90% of my allocated space to wuala is emptied and only 10% of it is now used for backing up someone else's file fragments.
Then wuala goes ahead and erases my files because my capacity is now lower than 10 GB?
wtf?
