    A comment on the idea "Avoid 'feature creep' in iPods!" in Apple:

    Totally agreed that competition is good for Apple - they do their best work from an "underdog" position. They're in a curious position now with the iPhone. The iPhone is regarded as the state of the art _now_, but an iPhone 3gs isn't substantially different than the original iPhone. It's received a few new features and speed enhancements while the competitors' products have gone through one, maybe two full redesigns. They have to be careful because purchasing habits in the handheld market can turn on a dime.

    From a designer's perspective, I hate to see the iPhone and iPod Touch as solutions in terms of problems. It's inconsistent with the original iPod's goal of design simplicity and singularity of purpose. Do one thing and do it well. The iPhone and Touch follow the personal computer model of a platform that runs applications that can solve current and unforeseen problems. A device in my pocket that does anything and everything doesn't simplify my life - quite the opposite. – badco, on July 28, 2009 16:03

    Avoid 'feature creep' in iPods!
    I'd like there to always be a high-end dedicated media player in the iPod lineup. The original iPod's brilliance is that it didn't try to do everything - it's just an exceptional audio player. Wifi, cameras, and App Store are all inconsistent with the original vision of simplicity. I already have a Blackberry, which does a large number of things poorly. I want an iPod to escape from that.
