Hey there,
Your bag will lose it's waterproofy-ness over time. It has a waterproof coating but over time it will wear down little by little. I was thinking maybe you could spray it with that water proof spray you spay on shoes and stuff. Maybe it is called scotch guard?
Maybe Barbour's does the same thing, but you will have to take your bags waterproofness into your own hands eventually.-

Will my waxed canvas Commute become less waterproof over time?I have an Original Commute in waxed canvas and I love it. My other TImbuk2 bags have the vinyl lining but this one has a non-waterproof nylon liner on the inside.
Will my Commute become less waterproof over time? If so, how can I maintain/restore its waterproofness? Can I use Barbour's waterproofing dressing for this purpose?

I wish this bag had a handle on the top similar to the Metro. Is it possible to buy a custom made one? – kimonostereo, on July 02, 2008 22:33

kimonostereo you might look into our xs messenger bags instead as they are roughly the same size as the metro and you get a waterproof liner.
A comment on the question "Different liner for the Metro?" in Timbuk2:
Thats too bad. We really love the Metro shape and size and a few friends were going to pick them up as they liked it as well. This might change their minds though as they both wanted the vinyl lining and rigidity.
Coincidentally, my wife uses the Metro as a purse but because it doesn't hold it's shape as well without the liner has been considering using her old bag again. :-( I hope the PD folks reconsider or choose a different interior material in the future! My Metro is pelting after 2 years of use and I'll have to replace it one day... – kimonostereo, on July 02, 2008 17:15

I just asked the PD people here at Timbuk2 and their answer was that they were going more towards a more lightweight purse-like bag with the Metro.
If she's looking for something a little more sturdy, maybe she could try out the cargo tote bags, which actually have that same vinyl liner inside. They also hold their shape quite well and come in a variety of colors.-

UPS is known for their overpriced shipping unless you negotiate a good corporate contract (telling them about quotes from Fedex and DHL as well as USPS - yes, they are reasonable - helps) – kj, on June 30, 2008 18:17

Hi Dave,
I hear ya, loud and clear. Unfortunately this one is a little harder to fix as we are currently losing money on all our international shipments. Because we don't have a distributor and ship each order individually through UPS international, it costs an arm and a leg. Some international shipments cost us as much as $100 to ship. Eeek!

Laura, the charge of $50 to ship to the UK is absolutely insane. I am in dire need for a replacement strap pad for my first messenger bag, bought in Seattle 12 years ago. I'm not paying that much for a $10 accessory. I contacted a few retailers here in Glasgow, Scotland, who have also stopped stocking your BEAUTIFUL bags due to the shocking delivery charges.
PLEASE HELP. I have 2 bags from Timbuk2, and will buy more but only if something gets done about this...it's just plain crazy. I'm one of the biggest evangelists for your gear you'll ever find, don't spoil that!

johnnymac replied on June 12, 2008 23:18 to the question "Did the strap material change? (Stiff vs soft/supple)" in Timbuk2:
Sounds like you may have gotten one of a small a run of bags that made it to market in 2007. They all had straps that were too stiff. I'd contact customer service if the bag is unusable.
As for Peewee vs the current bags, yes, straps have gone through a few changes, but the strap pad should be a nice option, not feel like a necessity.
