A comment on the idea "wagering on own questions" in Hubdub:

I like all of the ideas given by Tom...my only concern about the money issue was to allow some earnings (particularly for newbies) to help players build up some funds....maybe limited the reward to the first five successful questions created...but if not, that's fine...just as long as we get more people involved in the creation of questions...
Thanks for the reply

Although I see a point in deducting additional $H for voided questions, but I also see a potential for arguments about the voids since a loss of funds is involved...maybe a deduction after a certain number of questions have been voided...so as to allow new creators a learning opportunity...just thoughts, anyone else?
Bayoubear asked a question in Hubdub on August 09, 2008 13:05:
How do we encourage good question creation?I know that I've always gotten big kick out of creating questions and seeing how many people are interested in them and wager on them. In the early days (so long ago) I was always excited when I saw thousands of $H being wagered on one of them, or in seeing on of the stock market questions go wild at the end of the day.
We've gotten into the discussion of question creation, submission, and such on another thread, but maybe we should direct those ideas here for more discussion.
One idea I'd like to see is a reward system for question creation. This could be similar to the $H20 you get just for signing in each day. Once a day you could earn $H100 by submitting a question. This would be no big deal for the regular question creators, but really could be a spark of encouragement for the newer players. Of course, if the question had to be voided, the $H would be deducted, but this would just help them to learn to improve their questions. Perhaps as was already suggested, they could send their questions to a CatEd for review prior to publication.
Just an idea...thoughts?

Wonderful comments....this topic is really moving along smoothly...Infernalmachine makes a great point about providing the necessary information to help settle questions...when you're looking at what will possible be a large number of question for a cat-ed to settle, they'll need help from those who were interested enough to create the question.
On a related topic . . . noticed today a LARGE amount wagered on one of the business questions in the last 3-4 minutes before closing. The question allowed wagering up until 1 minute before the close and several wagers of $H10,000 were made in those last moments.
This goes back to the concerns of some players about the heavy wagering by some of the bigger players when the outcome is pretty darn certain, since there's so little time left for the market to change. That why some have been looking at closing their question 10-15 or more minutes before the end of a market. Now realistically, those who wagered about 50,000 in the last few minutes didn't actually make much compared to what they risked, but it was a pretty safe way to gain an extra 1-2,000 without much risk.
Just something for us to consider...not saying whether it's right or wrong, just that it illustrates what some players are referring to in their discussions about closing times.

I appreciate the topic being brought up now, particularly regarding the upcoming NFL season. Not only looking a questions being developed well in advance of the actual events (when the odds change throughout the season), but also the sheer number of possible questions. You could have 5-10 or more questions involving each of the 14-16 games each week, plus additional questions involving totals for all teams playing.
The NFL season will be a major area of concern as Hubdub moves through its first year of operation. Discussions need to begin regarding how we're going to deal with this area of our markets...we can already see some of the complications that may be on the horizon regarding the Olympics, with the large number of events being listed. This could just be a glimpse of what the first week of the NFL regular season may bring us.-

Thanks for doing just that...I began to change the times on the DJIA questions, at least the closing ones, because some were requesting an earlier close because they were 'concerned' that some were making 'big bucks' in the last few minutes.
I liked the idea of closing a few minutes earlier, because (IMHO) it did add a bit more prediction to the market, at least trying to figure what was going to happen in the last few minutes, a last minute drop, or sudden surge just before the bell.
But let's open it to discussion....you're the players, your voice is most important!

I'd originally set the 5 minute mark when setting up the question for the first time way back in February...I'd noticed that on those days when the market was teetering back and forth between two options it created a lot of excitement, and I believe it was good for Hubdub in general.
The only problem, and I see the point, is that setting a suspension time only 5 minutes before closing can give a BIG advantage to those of us who can be at our computer (and a relatively quick-moving one at that) to make those last minute adjustments...and in addition, some of those are big-money players who can drop a lot really quickly and make even more...but that is the American way, right?
I'm pretty happy with the 15 minute setting now, if for no other reasons than it does require at least a little predicative activity, and it may reduce the players who are dumping money on a sure thing. Hey, I've been guilty too.
I will always continue the daily indices questions, and I hope to be able to add to them along the way.

Tisha, I'm not sure if we decided to officially change the closing times...we've been trying the 15 minute option for the last week or so, and it seems to work fine.
@Hubdubbob . . . I understand your position...I don't have that much more myself and I've grown my assets primarily by wagers of $500-1000, usually totaling only a few thousand on any one market...sometimes covering 2 or more options.
But the BIG money guys need to be able to play larger amounts to keep 'the action' exciting for them...It's like making a successful poker player restrict his bets to $5-10 when he has thousands to bet.
Maybe additional rankings would help...I notice this week that you're racking up some really impressive %increases

@ Curios
My first day on the 'job' and I hope to be able to settle markets more quickly. Everyone can help by sending info to help settle markets, although I should be able to handle the standard markets (DJIA, Nasdaq, etc,) pretty easily.
Although Americans do make up the vast majority of Hubdubbers, I've love to see more participation worldwide . . . I would like to see us add the FTSE and DAX markets back to the system and also one or two of the markets (Shanghai , Nikkei, etc.) in your section of the globe. Not only are these markets important to a large segment of the global trading population, adding them back would also allow for round-the-clock play for Hubdub members.
Thanks for any positives and I'll work on fixing the negatives

When should questions related to the stock market (DJIA, NASDAQ, etc.) close? When should questions related to the stock market (DJIA, NASDAQ, etc.) close? Some have complained that these question close too late, that people are jumping in at the last minute when the outcomes have pretty well been decided...so when should these markets close?
There are those who can, and do, track developments during the trading day, and perhaps they should benefit from their efforts . . . but then there are others who can't and are trying to predict these markets before they even open.
So how should we handle this? Have different markets closing at different times? Use the stock market questions as an "in-play" situation?
Ideas??-

Trying to open a separate topic on this subject...I've changed my closing times to only 15 minutes before closing rather than 5, and on a day like today, a lot of people got caught on the wrong side . . .
I'm very open to suggestions, but I do like having it open during the day, since that allows people to react to announcements made along the way.
Maybe there should be questions that suspend before opening, like Kruijs % related questions as well as my point level questions....perhaps the close up or down questions should also end earlier...
Good points all...I'm just looking for ways to get and keep a lot of people involved!
