here's a relevant link:

this could be used to create "public" wikis....

I certainly think that there's value to the mediawiki (wikipedia) model of your ip being your unique identifier if you don't have a login... for large wikis where editors may only ever visit your wiki once and make a single contribution, there may be more typing involved to get to the edit than in the edit itself otherwise.
I'm pretty sure that you'd want an "allow anonymous edits" button in your admin page, so that wikis that use the "the *somethingsomething* that anyone can edit" model can have a home at pbwiki, along with all the other types of wikis you've got here. – Tim, on June 11, 2008 15:57

Hi Everyone, we're working on the issue, but I'd love to gather your feedback:
Should publicly-editable wikis be open to edits by anonymous non-users? OR should users be asked to login or create an account before being able to modify a page?
By having users log into their accounts before editing a page, the administrator may track who made what changes at any given time. The administrator will also have the ability to block or remove access from specific users.

Hi Ann,
Can I have you email support(at)pbwki(dot)com? We can discuss some options. Thanks! – Rachel Pennig, on June 01, 2008 16:40-

Rachel, I agree with the educators who have already posted. I have 2 wiki's under the PBwiki 1.0 that use an invite key -- works great! PBwiki 2.0 has a great look and seems like it might be easier for students to navigate, but I'm not going to be able to use it if I have to enter 100 student email addresses.
Now that I've set up a new wiki today (as PB 2.0), can I convert it to PBwiki 1.0? Or will I lose my wiki name (thinkgloballyactlocally)?
What I'd like most: PBwiki 2.0 uses invite keys.
What I can live with: The wiki I just set up can be changed to PBwiki 1.0
What would make me stop using PBwiki: PBwiki 2.0 doesn't use invite keys and PBwiki 1.0 is no longer supported.
Thanks! Ann

It's unrealistic to think that I'm going to or should have to add 200 students' email addresses to your users' page.
Please, consider the real world use cases of educators. We can't be in a position where we have to micromanage student user accounts.
* I need to be able to publish the password on my syllabus for all students to have instant access to the course wiki, or I can't use it.
* I need to be able to setup a wiki on the fly and allow students immediate access during the first class. Otherwise, PBWiki looks clunky to the people I'm demoing it to and is unusable in a real classroom setting.

HI BD- Just go to "Settings" and click "Users." You can add your students here by entering in their email address, choosing their access level, and clicking "Add." Then we'll send your students an email asking them to create a PBwiki Account, and they'll be able to access your wiki.
Hope this helps :)
