We do try to recognize alternate versions of company names, but there are many cases that we won't recognize (translating MS to Microsoft is a good example of something we aren't smart enough to do). I haven't seen many companies showing up in our system with their stock ticker in place of their name (MSFT for Microsoft), but it's an interesting idea, so I'll look into it.
When we don't recognize different company names, you can manually merge the companies into a single company by using the "Merge" feature in the "Actions" popup menu on the Companies page.

Actually, I'm referring to IMAP folders, which show up in Google Mail as Labels -- but Google Mail's web interface doesn't show the built-in ones that we use, such as "[Gmail]/All Mail" and "[Gmail]/Sent Mail". For UK users, these are called "[Google Mail]/All Mail" and "[Google Mail]/Sent Mail". Other folders created by an IMAP client do show up in the web interface with "[Gmail]" or "[Google Mail]" in front of the folder names, but the built-in ones don't appear on the web.

Hi Lincoln, it looks like your account is at googlemail.com rather than gmail.com -- for legal reasons, Google Mail users in the UK use a different domain and even a slightly different folder structure, which our software doesn't currently support (we need to have the right domain so we can log into your IMAP account, and we need to know the folder names so that we can find the right folders to process). Unfortunately, at this time, your account can't be used with Gist. We are currently working on the backend pieces to support UK Google Mail accounts, but I'm not quite sure when we'll be able to provide the user controls to enable this.

Aha! I believe that this is related to a special Gmail security feature that sometimes decides a given account must be unlocked via a special web page. Gmail was rejecting some IMAP logins with a cryptic message like 'Web login required' but logging in via the web (even via https, as was suggested by one person) didn't fix the issue. However, I eventually found the following web page within Gmail's Help, and using the DisplayUnlockCaptcha URL there helped:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/an...
If you've got IMAP access enabled, but Gist doesn't agree, try following the link in that article and giving Gist another shot.

ben replied on October 03, 2008 19:06 to the question "Support for Gmail accounts under Google Apps for Domain?" in Gist:
Gist does work with Google Apps for Domains (I personally use it this way), so this should work fine.
However, looking through Google's documentation, it appears that Google Mail users in the UK have a different IMAP server than users in the US. Unfortunately Gist doesn't support other IMAP hosts besides imap.gmail.com at this time.
Until we enhance our IMAP interface, an alternative way to try out Gist is to upload a CSV file of contact data. You can export from your Google Mail account, from LinkedIn, or many other sources, and upload that file to Gist. Gist won't be able to show you correspondence, links and attachments for your contacts in that case, but it can still bring you news about the people you know. It works especially well with LinkedIn data because of the presence of information about the companies where your contacts work.
