I'm the person who pardsbane linked to in his comment. I also am flabbergasted that this cannot be fixed. It seems like it should be an incredibly simple fix, and yet whenever I try to work through Microsoft support I get told repeatedly that there is no solution.

I feel like I'm getting shafted. I've been a member of Xbox Live almost since the beginning of the service and I feel like I'm not getting everything that I'm paying for. That's the crux of the problem here. I'm paying for a service and only getting some of the benefits.

Ben Storms asked a question in Microsoft Corporation on January 28, 2009 22:46:

    Ben Storms
Why can't I change the Windows Live ID that's linked to my Gamertag?
I talked to someone at tech support about this and they said it couldn't be fixed. I can't understand why this would be, and I'm just looking for a better explanation. I want to change the Windows Live ID that's linked to my Gamertag, but whenever I try to do that through the Xbox Dashboard I get an error message saying that it cannot connect to Xbox Live. This is ridiculous because I am already connected to Xbox Live.
When I told the customer support representative who I talked to about this, he told me that it was because the ID that was associated with my account had become "inactive" at some point and had disassociated itself from my Gamertag automatically. Because of this, there is no way to attach an email address to my Gamertag. How is this possible? How can there be no way for someone on the support staff to manually do something as simple as changing the email address in my account?
