If your advertising budget is zero, I suggest you find sites similar to your own, and write to them proposing link exchanges. If your site is new, the majority will decline, but don't take it personally.
Another tip: include your link with every post so that we can view your site and possibly offer other suggestions.
Here is a link to an article I wrote about linking that may be helpful:
http://psychedelictreehouse.com/Promo...
The article is intended for webcomics authors, but most of it would apply to any site.
I'm trying to build up my paid ad portfolio but if you are new there are many steps you can take to improve your site's visibility at no cost. But you have to read up, and give your site time, and keep improving the content.

Bengo asked a question in Yola on August 23, 2008 20:35:
How many additional domain names can be aimed at a Synthasite site?I was wondering if it were possible to do the 'add your own domain' under 'publishing settings' in synthasite for a SECOND domain name. I signed up for the same domain name, but ending in .net and it appears I can only add one domain name under 'publishing settings.' Thus, the .com domain name works fine, but the .net domain name will continue to link to the synthasite homepage unless I am able to do the same thing you advised before for the .com one.
This question is from my sister, who is unable to post it right now. I'll see that she gets the answer.
Thanks!

Hi, I've made a new site, very short and sweet, designed to help people find webcomics in the style I do:

Hi, I do an animal webcomic starring a labrador at http://www.ScratchinPostComics.com. If you ever add a links page to your site, I would be interested in trading links with you.
Nice pics, btw. – Bengo, on August 21, 2008 19:42

You are a good example of a socially useful and important site being made easily and cheaply with Synthasite, and which otherwise might not exist. – Bengo, on August 18, 2008 06:14

Hi Sush
I just want to clarify the steps for you to verify your site again, as this thread might have become somewhat confusing.
After you sign up for a Google Webmaster account and type in your URL, here are the steps you should follow:
1) Select the meta tag verification option. Here is an example of what you will see:
<!-- <meta name="verify-v1" content="bHhqyg8xA3R4knMc+W1+W7+U0/Fy2EBT580Jbxdtx8I=" /> -->
2) Copy only the long number you see between the quotation marks.
3) In SynthaSite, click on the properties sidebar and paste that code in the specially designated "Google Webmaster" field. Do this for every page of your site that you want Google to track.
4) Republish your site and check back with Google Webmaster to make sure that it has been verified
Let me know if you still have difficulty.
Best wishes
Monique

Precise definition of an updateMonique recently answered a user question and added the comment that Synthasite feels the two most important ways to get your site noticed (besides good content) are frequent updates and high quality links pointing at your site.
I find myself wondering, What counts as an update? Is it any revision followed by a publish? Or are they only counted as the number of pages with updates? Is fixing a typo enough to count? Do more frequent publishings count as more updates? Google search didn't yield much for me.
Bengo asked a question in Yola on August 12, 2008 23:55:
Designated Keywords - how important today? The new editor makes it super easy to add keywords to our sites... But just how important are designated keywords these days? I saw a film of a conference at Google in which the Google staff indicated they were no longer really relevant -- at least to them. What is collective wisdom at Synthasite on this topic?

Bengo replied on August 11, 2008 22:43 to the question "Ability to use entire screen for page space?" in Yola:
That sounds great. The footer makes me think of a comment to pass on to development, if possible. It would be excellent to have a navigation widget that can be edited.
Let me explain: A typical webcomic has navigation buttons under it that jump to FIRST, PREVIOUS, NEXT, LATEST. (See a simpler variation at http://scratchinpostcomics.com/ ). If you use linked images, it means importing up to four images and affixing a link to them. There is also pagination to consider, and some comics add a 5th link to ARCHIVES.
If there were one widget, like a divider widget with more cells, that "read" as separate images in each cell for the purpose of linking, that would be awesome. I get so tired of doing navigation work on every page from scratch.
In my other comic ( http://lilnyet.com/ )I am just using arrows but it's ugly and I would like to use images. I am getting away with two but more are standard, plus room for a page number. A six-cell widget that allowed the importation of a designated set of standard objects plus a page number change would be great, assuming not all the cells required filling.
This would really put you out front compared to other comics options I have seen.

Favourite Icons don't work on inner pagesI can't get the favourites icon to appear on the inner pages of my site. It only works on the home page, though I follow the same procedures, save, refresh, etc. The appropriate box fills with the appropriate image source.
Also, why can't I paste the image source into the boxes instead of opening the image library for every page?
Thanks!

gamedemon, below, has a good idea, but it's harmed by the fact that all your styles have at least some minor design features. For example, the crease under the masthead on this one: http://lilnyet.com/ And it would probably be impossible to lose that top edge and corner curves. – Bengo, on August 10, 2008 06:26
