    Hi,
Sorry I can't remember where it came from :( I would recommend an electronics components store, not just your average "Source" or whatever the heck they call Radio Shak these days. You may not even need a new jack. If you follow their instructions and disassemble the laptop down to the motherboard, you can see where the jack meets the motherboard, then it's just a matter of (carefully!) soldering the pins back in place. I found that this required frequent re-repairs, however, hence the addition of the external jack.

Re: Class Action. There's where part 2 of the story comes in, apparently I couldn't claim because I'm Canadian. Their Case Managers told me that I'd have to start my own lawsuit if I ever expected anything from them. Nice, eh? A different one promised to send me a laptop, presumaby just to get me off the phone. Should I be surprised that it never came? I don't expect anything from HP anymore except for misinformation and a grab for my money.

I completely agree. I had someone on the phone assure me that I would incur absolutely no charges if I received an incoming phone call in Calgary, even though my plan is in Edmonton. So, instead of mindlessly chatting with a friend online over the holidays, I took an incoming call. I got charged $50. That doesn't agree with "You won't incur any charges if you receive a phone call in Calgary.". My experience with customer service was basically getting brushed off, and eventually they said someone would look at it, but it was my own fault because I didn't understand the plan properly. That was 4 months ago. When I buy a cellphone plan and someone tells me "you won't get charged for that", then I get charged... I consider that lying. When you tell me it's my own fault that your sales agent didn't know what the hell they were talking about, I consider that rude.

    Power jack
Bought an HP laptop a few years ago. Pavilion series. The jack is designed terribly, it's not connected to the case, and it's only held to the motherboard by two small beads of solder. Naturally, after about a year and a half, the jack came right off the motherboard. Repeated calls to customer service resulted in me being told that the *only* thing they, or any HP repair service, could do, was replace the motherboard for approximately $800. I paid $1200 for the laptop. Even though this was apparently a common problem with the series, and a known issue, they still maintainted that I would have to buy a new motherboard. I thought that I was seriously screwed, and I almost didn't have any computer for university... until a friend took it apart and put in a new jack for the grand total of $4.

Seriously, 2 beads of solder aren't going to hold anything, especially a power jack that undergoes a fair (but not unreasonable) deal of stress.
