Create synth from HD camera footage
I want to start a discussion about an idea I had on how to build nice synth quickly and efficiently by leveraging the sheer power of an HD cam as a super fast continuous picture camera.

The idea is to use a good HD consumer camcorder (like my Canon HV20) to record progressive video of a scene while looking around from multiple location in the space. A good tripod/monopod should be used to get stable video from the scene.

You then import this video from the camera and then export it to a folder as 6 pps (pictures per second... 6 is a nice number because it divide the 24 frames per second of my HD footage quite evenly) jpg (you can do this via Quicktime movie to picture function). Simply navigate the 100s (or 1000s) of individual pictures to select the ones you think would by "synthy" and use that to build a nice synth of a scene. One could go crazy here and actually use the 1000s pictures to make the synth... ouch!

What do you think of that? The best would be if photosynth could accept the raw (or h264 converted) footage and analyse it on it's own to pick the best frames based on acceptable pictures differenciation and then use the pictures of what is relevant from it. This way it would save all the work of exporting and selecting.

Photosynth could even slice the inter picture to picture video in small chunk to show nice transitions from selected pictures to pictures. Essentially creating the illusion of walking in the picture path in 3D.

    Photosynth stuck a "Publishing" phase.
I have tried to create a photosynth twice with the same set of images but for some reason right after uploading all the pictures to photosynth the client stick to the "publishing photosynth" phase and won't go anywhere.

Trying to create another photosynth with the same name result in an error that a photosynth with the same name already exist... but looking at the web site the photosynth is not showing up.

My photosynth user id is bmaltais if that can help you.

I should mention that the picture size is 720p (1280x720). Not sure if it matter or not. What I am trying to do is see if I can expedite the creation of a synth by using footage from an HD cam in progressive mode and extract individual frames as photo from it to build a synth.

I should start a topic on that alone I think... link to HD topic

Another one would be the ability for photosynth to use "date" of set of pictures in a synth to present the evolution of a scene as time goes. An example would be the construction of a building. Start with bare ground view, the add foundation, then framing, then exterior finish, etc, etc. Right now photosynth try to put all this in one view and it just end up being very confusing ;-) – bmaltais, on August 22, 2008 12:38

The ability to add/remove pictures from a Synth are also something I wish was already there. Another nice feature would be to have the ability to manually synth pictures that Photosynth missed. I have uploaded a set of 36 pictures than will stitch perfectly to a full 360 view using ptgui but photosynth missed a few of them and missaligned a few of them ;-(
So having the ability to help photosynth manually to fix the errors would be nice. – bmaltais, on August 22, 2008 12:15
