Theoritically the new models are less prone to breaking. They redesigned the motherboard, cooling, and even the main chip itself to take care of the heat issue. As a nice side effect, it's also quieter and it doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner like the older generation.
Unfortunately getting one right now is like russian roulette. You need to be able to see the lot number (i forgot the right value) and the manufacturing date; both of which MS now tries to cover up with a new sticker. This means if you really want one you probably shouldn't order online (which kinda sucks since that means you'll have to pay sales tax).
o yeah - there are other problems depending on your setup too. Optical audio has a good chance of not working (sigh - lots of static), though HDMI is awesome.
With MS no matter how cool their products seem, quality is always an issue...

I must say that the XBOX 360 ELITE is trash. I've only had it for about a month an a half and I already have the "RED RING of DEATH". I've never in all my life had a product mess up in a month. TRASH is the only legal word I can share with you guys. I've had a SNES thats still works after 10 YEARS. I own both XBOX 360 ELITE and a Wii. Out of personal experience the ELITE is a true "brick".
P.S. It will take half a month to get it back. Vitalme kicks but in HALO 3.

Oh yeah, and I guess my second question was are the new models as susceptible to red ringing as the old ones? I mean, I love the 360, I love the games it has (DMC4 ftw in '08!), and I just can't wait to get one, but I'm still a little bit nervous about the infamous Ring and that as soon as I play it that it will join the thousands of other dead 360's that have met this fate. A couple of my friends have had 360's from launch that are still working just fine (albeit are now noisy as fuck because of all the dust thats collected inside of them), so should all these hardware problems really be a HUGE concern for me as a new 360 owner?

Hey guys, first off thanks for all the info so far on the 360 and all, it's really been a great help! I just got enough money this Christmas to (Finally!) get an Xbox 360, which I'll hopefully be going out to go get tomorrow. So anyways, I guess I just wanted to know if there was any "advice" or words of wisdom anyone could give me as I'm about to become a proud parent of a new 360 I guess. I've been doing as much research as I could before hand, and I'm going with the Go Pro 20 GB Xbox with Forza and Ultimate Alliance, and that SHOULD have the Falcon motherboard, right? If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Halo 3 has nothing to do with his research. Anyways. Killzone 2? How is that innovative. I remember getting my PlayStation 2 just to play Killzone and GTA: San Andreas. I kept making fun of my friend who had just bot a Xbox, yelling at him that Killzone would own Halo. Oh how he got his revenge. Killzone one was TERRIBLE, absolutely awful. Soon after I started playing his Halo 2 while at his house, alot, and then he got live, so I again started playing, alot. OMG. I remember after 3 months of him having it I begged my mom to get me one to (Only because he was never around when I needed him) . Greatest decision of my pre-high school life. After getting my original Xbox I realized the only game's I'd want to play on my PS2 was Grand Theft Auto, only because I didn't want to re-buy them all for my Xbox. Of coarse my same friend last Christmas got his 360. Then came Gears. Point is the 360 has TONS of innovative Shooters and other games. It owned the PS3 in that regard this year, then again, there's 08 for them to regain their throne. Good luck PS3, your gonna need it.

Dude Halo 3 isn't that good of a game LOL. Who really cares. When the "real" and "innovative" FPS games like HAZE and Killzone 2 come out, it will only be you Halo 3 Fannerds playing by yourselves via Halo 3's Matchmaking circle-jerk mode...
You hear that loud whooshing noise? That's the point sailing over your head...

You make a really good point on the hard drive... I also think MS made a mistake in downgrading the 360 from the 1st Xbox. I see graphical issues in games all the time because of it... not to mention loading times that just shouldn't be there...
However (while price is no longer an issue) you're also ignoring the PS3's main problem: it's very very hard (and expensive) to make games for it. Add 3rd place in terms of PS3 units in the field and what it means is that PS3 will never really have a lot of good games for it. Yes, there will be Gran Turismo, but for every Gran Turismo there will be a Halo, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Forza (the list goes on)...
Moreover equivalent Xbox 360 cross platform games (even with the hard drive weakness) will still be the better version. Why? MS knows how to make good software tools; Sony doesn't (and it doesn't help when the Cell architecture is the hardest to develop for), and it no longer has the advantage of the biggest install base.... look at Madden 08 as an example

"Let me start by saying that I'm in no way a MS fanboy... 4.It's only a game system, you will survive the week it's in the repair center, I promise."
I'm sorry but you do sound like a MS Fanboy. It takes 4-6 weeks to get your Xbox 360 back for repairs; not 1 week. Not to mention it will occur multiple times...
I'm not so sure my $450 Xbox 360 Elite investment was a smart one... then again PS3's software library will most likely never be good (too hard to develop for) and the Wii's current library is more for kids and casual gamers (yes, I own one too) (I probably should have got the cheaper 360 20GB version - most games don't use the hard drive at all except for game saves - which is really stupid)

Bought an 360 about 2 months ago, after 2 days it completly stopped being able to read discs (not the disc scatching problem), It doesnt seem to be known as a frequent problem but hardly improved my views on the build quality of these machines. Lucikly I took it back to the place I bought it from and they have me a brand new one straight away after checking the microsoft sticker hadnt been removed. No problems with this one so far (touch wood) and its an awesome machine when it works, but dont think i'll be buying another console with reliabilty issues until long after they are proven fixed.

Hey, big deal, you are one of the many people to get a red ring of death. Send it in, 3 year warranty. You know how many PS1 skippers, and PS2 skippers I went through since launch? I wish they would of lasted the 3 years each.
For those of you that had your 360 die without the red rings of death, go grab a blanket, wrap it around your 360, leave it on all day, and instant red rings of death. Now your 360 has a warranty, call MS, wait for the free shipping box, send it in, and MS will send you another 360. Good for the next 3 years again.

As I used to all three major new consoles.....I didn't have many friends that would constantly come over to play the wii. The 360 would light up the 3 rings of death and paying for xbox live when my xbox was getting repaired was not a lot of fun. So I opted and love my ps3. I do miss Gears of War and there was some nice things about the 360 (easier online chat w/ friends, connecting to my pc to stream vids and music).....I rather have free online network play and reliability than a few exclusive titles.

30 percent of the 360's are getting this "red ring of death" i have been a owner of the original back in 2001 and have had my 360 about a year now and nothing has gone wrong. like nothing so some people do manage to get lucky with buying the systems... maybe people sohoudl buy like a extra cooler system for their console or somthing.

The "extended" warranty ONLY COVERS THE RED RING OF DEATH and does not cover anything else. MS does NOT CARE - they are only concerned with sales and market share - they could care less about you the consumer. MS is only in the video game business because they saw Sony made money in it just like they are in the Zune business because of Apple. The Xbox division is $16 BILLION in the hole and after Halo 2007 came out, that was MS' last best hope to save the Xbox biz - it's pretty much dead like the ZUne - you see all the top execs abandoning ship. XBox will be third in 4 months. The technoolgy is fine but MS does not care about consumers.
