If you're willing to put your expensive laptop in a non-laptop messenger, you can fit the MacBook Air into an extra-small messenger, barely -- it deforms the bag a bit. But I do it all the time.

The MacBook Air fits great into a small classic messenger, along with books, change of clothes, camera, water bottle, bike pump and lock and more. The small messengers are remarkably capacious.
