A comment on the idea "Please make search easier on me" in Brightkite:
Marie, we pull all of our location data from Google's geocoder. I tested searching the locations you mentioned above in Google Maps and it seemed to have a hard time with them. This would explain why our database is not returning the proper results for you. There's no easy way for us to fix this, but we are doing what we can to make the location searches better. This beta is all about working out the kinks, so please bear with us. :) – Lesley, on August 29, 2008 16:42

Took me maybe 5 minutes trying to work out how to check in to Las Pinas City. I tried the map, but couldn't pinpoint a spot. I tried Philippines, found other cities, but I can't figure out how they got that working, e.g. "Mandaluyong, National Capital Region, Philippines". I finally checked the FAQ and googled for the latitude/longitude but now it says, "Las Pinas, , Philippines"... which looks kinda ugly -- ideally, there should be National Capital Region too in between.

wizard04 is correct, you would just search for "@starbucks in Denver, CO" or "@starbucks near zipcode/address". You don't have to do 2 separate checkins. :) – Lesley, on August 28, 2008 23:03

Just search for "someplace near somecity", like in google maps. – wizard04, on August 28, 2008 12:15

the most recent changes are not an improvement for those of us who travel a lot. i can understand the value of one search box if all my queries are in the same city, but they're not.
please bring back the optional 2 box search. if i'm in the same city, i can just use the place search; but if not, it's nice to be able to type both the city and the place instead of having to do 2 checkins. i don't want to do 2 checkins -- especially if i'm sending them to twitter or any other service!

Brady's reply to "fireeagle integration" was just promoted to the most useful! Håkan Dahlström and 3 other people think it's one of the best replies.
We don't currently support pulling from FE because there is no scalable way to consume FE information...we'd have to poll the FE status for every FE user every few minutes...that's fine for a few people, but not for thousands of users.
We've working with the FE team to address this (probably through an XMPP-based push service).

I ran into this problem at the Charger's game at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Now that I know it is an issue I can watch out for it, but it seems like the problem could become extensive (shopping malls, parks). I hope that when you do find a solution you will be able to merge the place stream. Both BiggDogg and I posted photos of the same event, but they are now in separate place streams.
A comment on the question "SMS command for checkin not in reference page." in Brightkite:
Notsheep, checkins should work via SMS with or without the space. I just tested this to be sure and it worked for me both ways. The exclusion of checking in using a placemark is an oversight and we appreciate you bringing it to our attention. We will be sure to update the SMS guides with that information. :) – Lesley, on August 25, 2008 23:18

notsheep replied on August 24, 2008 15:15 to the question "SMS command for checkin not in reference page." in Brightkite:
There appears to be an inconsistency/error in the sms commands on the Starter Guide/Reference. In the Complete Reference, the checkin is given as:
@address
But in the Starter Guide, it says:
@ address (with a space after the @)
From my testing, it looks like the latter (with the space) doesn't work.
Also there is nothing on either page about checking in using a label (@label), which I think would be a useful addition.

Balaji, we are definitely considering users like yourself in regards to this feature. We will make sure that you are able to pull this data across all of the interfaces and not just using SMS or mobile email. :) – Lesley, on August 21, 2008 22:05

i want to be able to go to my Windows Mobile Brightkite app (a native app), and have it guess the vicinity for me.
if it's near a placemark, ask me--"you're close to [placemark name]", want to check in?
if it's not, give a general area name, and ask to check in
if that's not what we want, fall back to a normal search (however you want to implement)
i haven't messed with the Google API, let alone know if there's one for the mobile app, but the hoi polloi may be able to come up with this, now that i think about it--but i'd appreciate it more if it came from brightkite ;-)
