The sprites sound like a great idea. Also you could run a build script that concatenates the CSS into one file (same with JS). Also remove whitespace from CSS and run YUI Javascript Compressor or the Javascript.
"For every load except the initial, fully uncached load" -- unfortunately this is a very common situation. It is also when the first impression is made.
Regardless, 435K is pretty hard to defend :) That's almost half a megabyte for a single web page!
Brian Klug reported a problem in Get Satisfaction on January 21, 2008 08:57:
It takes 15 seconds and 117 HTTP requests totaling 435KB to load http://getsatisfaction.com/satisfactionThere are a number of performance issues with Get Satisfaction. Even the static servers (2.static, 1.static and 0.static) sometimes take several seconds to serve a single CSS file. But 117 requests is a LOT either way - and 435k pretty much guarantees a poor user experience unless the user has a broadband connection.
Brian Klug shared an idea in Get Satisfaction on January 21, 2008 08:19:
The "A new topic was posted" e-mails sent from Get Satisfaction should include the subject of the topic. All the e-mails sent about new topics have the same subject line "A new topic was posted in PBwiki". As a result,
1) Gmail lumps all the e-mails into one thread
2) You can't tell what the problem is by the subject line

Brian Klug replied on January 18, 2008 22:27 to the problem "You should check GS in IE6" in Get Satisfaction:
Hi there. I can reproduce the problem on a Clean, perfectly validating HTML page:
http://klug.pbwiki.biz/s.html
I'm using IE6 and it simply doesn't load.
All I did was copy the widget code directly from Satisfaction into a HTML page and it doesn't load
Brian Klug marked one of Paul Singh's replies in PBwiki as useful. Paul Singh replied to the idea "I'm a teacher. How can I get my students logged into a wiki when they don't have e-mail addresses?". Brian Klug and 8 other people think it's one of the best replies.
