A comment on the idea "What about a Flickr group for Noticings?" in Noticings:
The clusters page is also fun: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/not... :) – britta, on November 20, 2009 08:12

Hmm, I've noticed that being weird too, but I didn't know how I'd prefer it. Listing "neighborhood, city, state, country" seems like it could get long, but I think it'd be useful.
Slightly related: it's a little bit confusing that both the city of Santa Barbara and the greater county of Santa Barbara are listed as "Santa Barbara, United States". I'd expect the county to be labeled "Santa Barbara County, United States". (Geotagging something as the county "neighborhood" is useful for the many unincorporated parts of my county that don't have neighborhood names within Flickr.)

I definitely look at other people's noticings! Not all of them, but a lot of them. I like seeing what other people have discovered and getting a taste of other neighborhoods around the world. Other people's photos also sometimes give me ideas for noticings around here. :)
I think the brand-new rule for three noticings per day will help with the quality. I also like the idea of being able to "favorite" really good noticings.
I'd also be interested in an alternate view for each day's noticings, a little bit in the style of The Big Picture: along with the normal thumbnail view for a day's noticings, give us a page with all of today's photos in a reasonably large size so that people (at least those with good download speeds and large screens) can enjoy them by scrolling.

I think three is a good limit (as discussed on the "dirge" thread, which might be an interesting read for other people too). I'm looking forward to how this will turn out!-

It looks like Lost monkey doesn't have a geotag, but I don't know what might have gone wrong with Lone Red Ball...
britta replied on November 16, 2009 23:39 to the question "Do you need a Flickr pro account?" in Noticings:
This triggered something deep in my mind:
Click Why aren't my photos appearing in searches or groups? — it says:
"If your account is new, first you need to upload at least 5 photos. After that minimum has been reached, then it shouldn't take more than a few days until your photos appear in searches, groups, etc. To make sure your photos show in searches, remember to add accurate tags and descriptions."
Could that be the problem?

britta replied on November 15, 2009 01:31 to the idea "Appreciate another player's noticings" in Noticings:
I know I'm full of suggestions, but...I'd like something separate from Flickr favorites! My criteria for a Flickr favorite is somewhat different from my criteria for a great noticing.
For example, I really liked somebody's photo of a lost fishing float since it's unusual to randomly notice fishing floats, but I usually only favorite Flickr photos that I think are interesting aesthetically as well as having a good subject.
britta reported a problem in Noticings on November 14, 2009 18:09:
Aimed for the lunchtime bonus, but missed it?Hmmmm, I took a photo between 12 pm and 2 pm on each work day this week, but I didn't get the lunchtime bonus (as described on the rules page) for my Friday photo. Did I do something wrong? Maybe because of the holiday on Wednesday? :)
Here's some documentation of my turns (my photo is the last one in each screenshot) — Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Compare to my Noticings profile.
Update: "noticing something every lunchtime for a working week, noticing something every lunchtime for a working week, and noticing something every lunchtime for a working week"...hmm.

I sometimes check in on the tag page for "noticings" if I'm eager to see the next day's work: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/not... -- I like Flickr groups, but how might one add something more? Maybe being able to use Flickr's map-the-group's-photos feature?

A comment on the question "Do crowds = people?" in Noticings:
Yeah, it's a subtle distinction. :) The sunset or cloud configuration seen in the photo would only last for minutes, but I think that parked cars tend to sit for at least an hour or two.
There's actually an art car that I've seen parked in various places in my neighborhood several times, although I don't know who owns it or where they live. I'd like to take a photo of it next time I see it. It's a local institution in its own way. – britta, on November 05, 2009 21:11
A comment on the question "Do crowds = people?" in Noticings:
I see how that makes sense. I choose to keep default filename titles for idiosyncratic aesthetic reasons, so the explanation of the subject is in the less-visible photo description. It's OK with me if my noticings get disqualified sometimes for that. :)
If you're curious, the photo description links to an article with context: the brown thing in the photo is an open box, in the center of a neighborhood, where anyone can drop off useful unwanted items and/or browse to gather items. ends up supporting the local community both practically and through random box-browsing conversations across the usual socioeconomic lines. I'm fond of it. There are a few similar installations in other places with radical pasts. – britta, on November 05, 2009 20:56
