I really don't think the posts here are trying to hurt Thomasville. I am an advocate of Consumer Reports and as a wise consumer I research products before I spend my hard earned dollars. We need to let people know of problems or issues we've encountered when dealing with any company. Silence is acceptance. Emma was right when she said "we can only sell what you will purchase" and as long as we continue to buy we are validating the 'quality' that is being sold to us. If we don't like the ride we need to get off the train. Just think, if Americans had implemented Edward Deming's quality control theory we would be the manufacturing giant of the world instead of Japan. – BT, on September 26, 2008 00:18

Another concern is that with furniture being made in places like China are they using products that have been banned in the United States as hazardous? I purchased a "Made In China" bench with a cloth covered seat that I was going to use in a sunroom. The chemical smell coming from the bench was so overwhelming that I had to set it outside, hoping the odor would go away. Even after 3 days of sitting outside the strong chemical odor was still very apparent. When I returned the bench the sale associate commented that they often receive things from lamp shades to furniture with overwhelming chemical smells so strong that had made people that worked there sick. Disturbing.

I was interested in purchasing a new leather sofa so I went to the Thomasville dealer here in Colorado. The salesperson told me that Thomasville-Drexel-Henredon have been losing money and Lane was the only part of the company that was showing a profit. The salesperson showed me other higher end (expensive..or should I say "overpriced") pieces but advised that they're all made in China. I'm a "detail person" (hubby called it "anal") but upon closer inspection of sofas and other items I have determined there is an overwhelming abundance of junk out there. It doesn't matter where a product is made as long as there is quality control and pride in workmanship (Lexus, Honda, Toyota) and that starts with the CEOs. I've often wondered...who really owns the factories in China? And, are the companies really losing money or are certain people being paid exorbitant wages with benefits to match? My home has too many mirrors and I couldn't look in one of them knowing I was responsible for a company that pride and quality was not on the list of attributes. After reading the previous posts I have crossed Thomasville off my list until they can show improvements have been made.
