Hi Tom,
Notifying user's from help center via email is something that we punted on: It didn't get built into help center, and we currently don't send email out for content that gets posted through the API.
The reason we don't send out email from API usage is because it was confusing to post a message though help center and then get a link in your email back to get satisfaction's main application. We couldn't come up with an ideal answer.
I would consider it one of the tradeoffs to choosing to use help center over the main application. I'm sure that if someone was industrious enough to take on building it into Help center's code, I'd work with them to make sure the API can support the needed data calls.

Thanks Rachel, I'll be investigating and working to determine the cause. Thanks for the report and sorry for the breakages. – Scott Fleckenstein, on August 12, 2008 16:25

Hi Scott- this is happening sproadically. I'm getting emails through our help line saying that people aren't getting responses to their GS posts- because we're not getting them. It seems to happen with both replies and new topics. – Rachel Pennig, on August 12, 2008 16:02

Bravisa FAQ, I'm pretty sure that the reason you are seeing that (admittedly poor) error message is that you're attempting to add an email address that is already in our system. I've corrected the code that delivers that error message and it will go out with our next deploy. Meanwhile... I would check the inbox for the email address you are trying to add. I'll bet there's already some email from Get Satisfaction there. :) – Cameron Walters, on May 07, 2008 23:42

Cameron, one of our other developers, is going to follow up and track down the solution. Expect him to report back here. – Scott Fleckenstein, on May 07, 2008 23:18

Scott,
I get a related error message ("There was an error saving notification preferences - emails is invalid") when I try the add/change/delete e-mail function.

Looking at the bugs database, It seems like some people are having issues with single message queues having multiple consumers. The problems with this setup isnt anything consistent though, as for most it is running just fine.
Our issue could be related to this, or it could be related to the fact that we're using STOMP (which is an alternate transport for AMQ). The STOMP connector seems a little immature, as I have had to work around one problem already in the implementation.
Or, it could be a combination of both :).
Fortunately, We don't huge message traffic, and the ruby-based stompserver should handle our needs for now. I'll look into the possibility of replacing ActiveMQ with stompserver soon.
Thanks again for all of your help.

Nick, sorry I missed this post. It was a busy day.
I've seen now what the actual cause is, but haven't yet pinned down the fix. It seems the message queue we are using (Apache ActiveMQ) seems to get in a little bind every now and again and decides to stop sending messages it receives to the consumers.
I'll look into what could cause this, but I'm afraid my lack of experience with ActiveMQ could make the process a bit slow. I'll update everyone here with progress as it comes.

Looking at the outgoing message traffic, it seems like messages are getting sent almost instantly. There are being sent to postfix immediately from the rails code, and they aren't backing up in the postfix queue.
What this means is that the mail could be being held up during the relaying process. This could be caused by the fact that we no longer have the appropriate SPF entries in our DNS records (due to our sudden switch of DNS services on monday), which could be causing delays. I simply don't know enough about the nuts-and-bolts of how mail gets delivered. We do plan on re-implementing SPF, as well as DKIM, though.
I'll do some more looking into what could be the causes.
