Congratulations, you've found a bug. Because public profiles are visible to the whole internet, we cache a lot of the information on those pages to stop our database catching fire if one suddenly got a lot of traffic from somewhere.
Whenever you change something about your trips or your account, we're supposed to throw away the cached information and refresh it from the database. But changing your profile picture was one case we missed. We've fixed it in our codebase and you'll see it change when we deploy the new version to the servers this week.

mattb replied on August 04, 2008 10:51 to the problem "Twitter account linking problem" in Dopplr:
This morning we discovered a bug that has affected about 60 Dopplr accounts, including yours. It meant that when you sent us a message to associate your account with your Twitter account so that you could send us trips, it didn't work correctly.
We've just fixed the bug and deployed new code to our servers. If you'd like to try again starting at http://www.dopplr.com/account/twitter then the process should now work.
I'm sorry for this problem, and hope you enjoy using our new Twitter feature.

We were just talking about how best to do this in the office this week. Right now, Dopplr trips are tied to 'days', without specifying the timezone. You're right that many things are tied to midnight GMT, although it's not true everywhere. For example, we send a "is travelling today" message to your Facebook feed at midnight in the timezone of where you are on that day, and we're moving everything over to being timezone sensitive in the same way.
We definitely plan to have a way to specify the actual time of day of arrival/departure, so we can use that everywhere in status messages and calculations. We're also thinking about moving some of the daily calculations to 6AM rather than midnight, since almost nobody makes their actual travel at midnight of the travel day. What do you think?

You're quite right, and (after the distractions of getting to our public launch in December 2007) we're now actively working again on making this better.
As you say, we wrote a bit about this issue in a post on our blog last year -- http://blog.dopplr.com/index.php/2007... -- and there was good conversation in the comments too.
We're very grateful that you went and edited Geonames to make the dataset better. Your work will be incorporated into our database soon.

The link to the timeline is only visible when you're looking at someone else's list of trips - so that you can compare your timeline with theirs.
We used to show it on your list of trips too, where it would compare your trips with everyone who shares with you, but we quickly found that the timeline widget doesn't work very well once you've got more than about ten timelines showing. We plan to develop a better way to visualise everyone's trips together.-

Right now, there's no way to enter historical trips, but I agree it's an important part of talking about your travels. We're working on features right now to enable it.
My philosophy is that browsing your old trips (and those that people have shared with you) should be a bit like browsing through a good blog archive. There should be a search mechanism, a calendar overview, and a page per trip that brings together everything we know about it. When you go on new trips to places you've been before, we'll bring back information on what we know about the previous times you've been there.-
