thanks for the response. I am learning flex 2 right now so I am very new to actionscript. I have no idea how to implement your suggestions, but I am glad it sounds possible.
Arrays of tilegrids and marker clips +1.. That is exactly what I need. As I muddle through this I will update the site with my progress.

Can the map control support layers of tilesI would like to use Modest Maps in a similar fasion to openlayers www.openlayers.org It would use one of your existing tile providers as a base map and then make additional requests to a WMS server or another tile cache to use as overlays.
Can Modest maps support this? -

Thanks to Bill Thorp I was able to get this resolved. Simple really.
First download modest maps from SVN: http://modestmaps.mapstraction.com/sv... using SVN tool of choice.
From Flex Builder 2-
For a new flex project
1-File>New>Flex Project
2-Select basic radio button then press next
3-Name your project-then press NEXT button
4-In the source path dialog box select add folder>browse> select the as3/lib folder from you as3 Modest Maps svn repository-press ok
5-you should see the path added to your source path dialog-press FINISH
6-Flex Builder will open your <project name="true">.mxml file by default.
7-select file>open file and browse to the as3 directory of your svn repository and open SampleFlexClient.mxml- select all contents and copy them
8-paste into your <project name="true">.mxml file deleting the FlexBuilder generated content.
Save and run. Works great</project></project> -
