I did a bit more investigating, and here are my results:
1. I wiped my Ipod Classic 80GB by restoring it to factory settings.
2. I re-synced it with my music collection. Everything went fine. No duplicates that I noticed. At least I could now fit my 60-odd GB of music on an 80GB Ipod, which I couldn't before
3. I added more music to my library, so
4. I synced it again.
5. Immediately there are three copies of every song that is on a playlist.
So, the only solution seems to be to wipe the Ipod every time before syncing. Not really a solution at all. I did not sync this Ipod or transfer any files to it using any other software, so the issue is entirely within Songbird.
I would think that syncing with an Ipod is a fairly common practice. I also think playlists are fairly common as well. So, to me, this is a rather fundamental issue. If I can be told that someone is working on this (someone who has an Ipod to check it out) then I'll stick around for the result. Otherwise I'm going to have to move on.
As it is, it takes at least ten minutes to mount my Ipod in Songbird and another ten or fifteen to sync it (because it insists on re-copying all the songs within the playlists). If I have to wipe it every time, then syncing will approach a one-hour ordeal. Not pretty.

As a fitness instructor, I use playlists for workout routines. In fact, that's my primary reason for having an Ipod at all. So having a single massive playlist is not a solutions for me. And since this problem with duplicates prohibits me from fitting 64GB of music onto an 80GB ipod, I'll have to find a solution elsewhere, it would seem.
Syncing does not just duplicate songs, it adds songs from the playlists on every sync, so some songs have six and seven copies (and growing). I tried to delete the entire library from the Ipod and reset it to factory defaults, but that appeared to hang everything, and songs were not deleted.
