Calle replied on September 17, 2009 07:32 to the question "Can you stream to a Squeezebox?" in Spotify:
Again. Ways around things to make the squeezebox / sonos play Spotify streams isn't what this is all about. I still fail to see the purpose of such complicated setups. If you can accept computer involvement, get an Airport Express and use Airfoil - simpler, cleaner, and cheaper.
What we need and wish for is the possibility to actually use the Squeezebox (or Sonos) integrated with Spotify, so you can see and control the Spotify streams on your Squeezebox/Sonos hardware.
It's impossible with the Squeezebox (even when APIs are available) since you really need builtin firmware support to be able to stream Spotify without having a computer running (like Napster).
And I strongly suspect it's impossible to stream Spotify to the iPhone and wirelessly stream from it to the Sonos - there seem to be lots of legal issues with that. There's a reason you can't stream Spotify to an Airport Express from the iPhone...
I, and many others, have vast collections of music on the computer, wich we can stream to the livingroom stereo easily thanks to Squeezebox. We can sit in our sofa and browse our music without turning on a big LCD screen. It's so easy our parents can use it. And, in the case of Napster, even without turning on the computer... THIS is what we're looking for with Spotify. That would enable us to replace our music collection on the computer with a Spotify stream - but only if the convenient browsing etc works. Crippled solutions involving complicated computer frameworks and _the need to actually use the computer to listen to Spotify_ just doesn't cut it.
It's like having a Spotify app on the iPhone but you would need to connect it to a computer to actually listen to it.... convenient? No.
And that's why at least I get a little frustrated when this thread gets occupied with all sorts of crippled solutions instead of showing the Spotify team that what we want is a fully integrated solution, and that this would turn many of us into paying subscribers instead of CD buyers.
It would be really nice with some input from the Spotify team on the status of this issue (yes, I understand that mobile phones are of higher priority, but it would be nice to at least see that they understand what we want here).
Please, no more "but I can already stream to my Squeezebox, just by using 5 software products and three computers" - I can stream Spotify to my Boston Solo kitchen radio if I want to, but what we need is the full integration of Spotify on the Squeezebox, with remote control browsing and title display, without any computer involved whatsoever.

Please. We're not after "temporary solutions" here. What we'd like to see is a full fledged Squeezebox integration, in order to control Spotify with the Squeezebox remote and see what's playing on the Squeezebox display, etc.
It works with Napster. Why not with Spotify? And why is Spotify so totally silent about this, given the massive interest here?-

Replying to my own idea, having Airport support in Spotify for iPhone would make things rock bigtime. A real Squeezebox Duet killer...
I fail to see where the problem lies - the guys at Rogue Amoeba have already done it, talk to them or Apple or do it yourself? How hard can it be? ;)
The main general advantage of having Airport support directly in Spotify is that even my parents could use it. Adding the extra Airfoil step just doesn't bite for them.

Having Airport support in the Spotify for iPhone application would certainly rock things bigtime. – Calle, on August 04, 2009 07:24-

A comment on the question "Can you stream to a Squeezebox?" in Spotify:
But this thread started 10 months ago, long before the iPhone was on the map. The question I believe folks want answered is if Squeezebox support is "next in line" or still "just wait for the API".
And what I'd like to see answered is if they still believe that the API will solve the problem or if they have understood that they need to integrate Spotify on the Squeezebox itself, just like Pandora/Rhapsody. I don't just want to stream to the Squeezebox, that I can already, I want to be able to see what's playing and to navigate music using the remote. – Calle, on July 31, 2009 08:25

Stream to an Airport Express directly from SpotifyI am using Airfoil on Windows to stream Spotify to another computer or Airport Express.
And then it hits me. Why can't Spotify do this by itself, like iTunes? It would be marvellous to be able to select an Aiport Express directly from Spotify... built-in Airfoil support wouldn't be too hard to accomplish? Together with the guys at http://www.rogueamoeba.com/ perhaps.
Calle asked a question in Spotify on June 26, 2009 11:21:
FULL support for Logitech Squeezebox - no need for computerWhen will you fully support the Logitech Squeezebox, like they do with Rhapsody? Ie, be able to browse music using the remote, see what's playing on the screen, all without having to turn a computer on?
It would be the perfect match, especially now when you're adding high quality streaming.

You are so happy with so little.
You still need to have your computer turned on and you still have to control what you're listening on on the computer. Why why why oh why can't they make it possible to CONTROL the music on the squeezebox?
You are using a very good and competent device (the Squeezebox) as a simple Airport Express. The biggest advantage of the Squeezebox is it's GUI and manouverability - both the old ones and the new Duets.
A small but still big enough display so I can see what I'm actually listening on without turning on a big computer screen. A small and handy remote that I can use to select the songs I want, without taking a big chunky keyboard out.
They did it with Rhapsody, which is the exact same service. I can't believe all the happy feelings in this forum - sell your Squeezebox and buy an Airport Express instead, it's good enough for you.
The very instant I get FULL support for Spotify on my Squeezebox I will sign up for a lifetime contract, and I'm pretty sure there are quite a few like me. Why is that so hard to understand? And now with better audio quality (that the Squeezebox will be able to use!).... it could be soooooo perfect, and now it's sooooo flunked.

Yea yea but can you actually control what you listen to via the SqueezeBox remote control? Without using the computer at all?
The optimal solution still is FIRMWARE SUPPORT - then you'd be able to use Spotify without any computer whatsoever. – Calle, on May 04, 2009 21:53

I still believe you need firmware support in the SB to be able to use it properly, like Pandora etc. What you would need is to search Spotify just like your own music collection, with searching etc.
Perhaps that is possible to do with a squeezebox plugin, but somehow I doubt it... – Calle, on April 21, 2009 10:24

Very nice Magnus, a great guide!
However, what would really make things rock would of course be builtin support for Spotify.
That way, you could also
- Choose what to listen on using the remote control
- Turn off the computer completely when connecting the Squeezebox directly to Spotify
Imagine a Squeezebox Boom in your kitchen tuned in to Spotify...
I really hope that the people at Spotify notices that this is a really wanted feature. – Calle, on February 10, 2009 22:15
Calle replied on January 13, 2009 11:59 to the question "Can you stream to a Squeezebox?" in Spotify:
An add-on solution using Spotify SDK would be nice of course but best of all would be to have it integrated in the SB firmware, like Rhapsody already is.
An SDK-solution would be nice of course but integrating Spotify in the Squeezebox itself would mean that you don't have to turn the computer on at all.
So I hope the people at Spotify are listening, the interest on this topic here speaks for itself... Squeezebox owners should be really low hanging fruit for Spotify, but just providing an SDK would not be the optimal solution.
