I have a similar problem.
I have a Nintendo Wii, Denon 4308,
and Sharp LCD(1080p).
The Wii goes to the Denon using the standard composite cable. The Denon upconverts over hdmi to the Sharp LCD.
When I play a regular disc-loaded game, everything is fine.
When I play a game downloaded straight to the Wii (like Super Mario 3) the screen goes blank. And on Super Mario 1, I can even hear the game start but can't see anything until I press the 'home' button.
But if I hook up the Wii composite cable directly to the LCD, it's fine.

This is a widely reported problem that affects newer LCD and plasma TVs. From what I've heard the fix is to connect your Wii with component video cables, then do the following things:
- Change settings on the Wii to 480p
- Start the virtual console game, which will likely still be blank
- Press the home button, and you'll see the game screen in the background as you've described
- Click the Continue button to play the game
Hope that helps.-

Can't see the game I just downloaded from the Virtual Console!I just downloaded "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" off the virtual console...I can hear the game's background music, but the screen remains blank. When I go to the menu screen (game in pause), I'm able to see the paused game in the background. What gives?!
Anyone else experiencing issues downloading virtual console games?
