On Linux, greader GM script just greys items instead of hidingOn linux, the postrank google reader greasemonkey script just greys out items instead of hiding them. On Windows and Mac OS X it hides poorly-ranked items. Why doesn't the script hide items on Linux like it does on Windows and the Mac?
canadrian replied on July 18, 2009 00:57 to the idea "64-bit Boxee" in boxee:
I'm not touching Boxee until it's native 64-bit on Ubuntu. No way am I going through the rigmarole they link to on the FAQ documents. Add to that the fact that last time I tried Boxee (on my Mac) the UI was annoying, there's no progress indicator when it scans content, and there was no way to manually tell it what was TV and what was movies (the auto-recognition is dubious at best), there just no point in forcing 32-bit boxee to run on 64-bit linux just to see if it doesn't suck as much as it did a few months ago.
It's aggravating. Everyone talks up Boxee like it's the shiznit (Cali Lewis on GeekBrief.tv, various tech blogs, etc.) but it's not 64-bit and it's taken so much control out of the hands of the user that it doesn't work properly half the time. XBMC on the other hand is so arcane, complex, and poorly-documented that it's impossible for any normal human being to use half its functionality.
I just wish Plex worked on Ubuntu. Then I could officially rubber-stamp it "problem solved."-

canadrian shared an idea in The Cosmic Machine on February 25, 2009 18:24:
The HUD should be a Dashboard WidgetFor notification of new events, Growl works great, and the auto-appearing HUD is overkill (plus it gets hidden under other growl notifications). For reading particular subsets of events, the HUD is a bit under-powered, and I would rather be able to click on the EventBox dock icon to bring up the full window and not the HUD. Where the HUD is useful is when I want to quickly read say, my latest unread items in all categories or a particular category. But I can't bring up the HUD quickly - I'd have to either replace the main window with the HUD, open the main app and open the HUD from a menu, or have it appear automatically and get in the way all the time.
Now I tried this "global hotkey" thing, but it wouldn't let me map F5 to bring up the HUD. It just ignored the keystroke. I think it has to do with the function keys on my Macbook. I don't want to disable the function keys so I have to hold down FN every time I change my volume.
Can't the HUD just be a Dashboard widget? Why does it have to be an entirely new kind of beast? Bringing up simple windows for quick glances at things is exactly what the Dashboard is already for. I think this would be a much better place for the HUD. We don't need to reinvent the wheel when this sort of functionality is already built into the OS.
And don't give me no jibber-jabber about the Dashboard using up RAM or CPU time. Seriously, on any modern computer there is no way the Dashboard is using enough of the user's CPU or RAM to affect their daily lives.
A comment on the problem "Auto refresh interrupts reading "Unread" items" in The Cosmic Machine:
Never mind - I just bought EventBox. For now avoiding the "unread items" folder works ok, and I'm sure updates and improvements will come regularly. – canadrian, on February 25, 2009 18:11
