A comment on the praise "The new Songbird 1.0 icon!" in Songbird:
Why does it even matter how it "fit[s] in with the icon[s] of most other programs?" Songbird can't afford to sink into pathetic conformity because being different is what drew people to it in the first place. An applications icon is one of the first things people see and its is used to advertise it. This whole new icon thing is just a case of multiple branding personality disorder and it isn't going to be effective, you might as well be distributing on OSS version of WMP-the king of all generic media players. – Carlos K, on November 11, 2009 21:42
A comment on the question "Why do I need a poorly designed web browser for my music!?" in Songbird:
How, exactly, is the version of Gecko inside of Songbird crippled? And what makes Songbird's web browsing functionality inferior to that of Firefox? – Carlos K, on November 08, 2009 20:40

In nearly all situations I'll agree with whoever is proposing something that'll make the software I use lighter and more streamlined. However, in this case I'm going to have to disagree, not because I want to keep songbird fat but because you're forgetting something very important.
Songbird, like Firefox, uses XUL for it's UI. XUL is powered by Gecko (the rendering engine used by mozilla prducts). It is therefore impossible to remove the web browser without rewriting most, if not all, of the application.
What Songbird needs is an entire version without any feature adding that is dedicated entirely to code optimization and improving memory management. (after they get feature complete, that is)
Carlos K replied on November 07, 2009 09:19 to the idea "Make a fusion between Miro and Songbird" in Songbird:
Why in the world should Songbird become a massively bloated monolithic jack-of-all-trades iTunes rip-off?
If you want a fast app make it for a specific purpose and you can tune the heck out of it and squeeze every drop of performance out of the code because you don't have to worry about extraneous things like "video playback" and "visualizations."
If you want an app that does everything out-of-the-box you can't expect it to be fast by any means, things just don't work that way.
Or you can do what Songbird is currently doing and make a generic and very flexible base upon which additional functionality can be built.
A comment on the idea "Show song in a polychromatic Moodbar!" in Songbird:
And it turns out that Amarok's moodbar uses Gstreamer to do its stuff! – Carlos K, on October 20, 2009 19:19
A comment on the idea "VISUALIZATIONS!" in Songbird:
Depending on how the libraries you use are connected to songbird you may or may not be forced to GPL the code it really depends on how it's implemented – Carlos K, on October 01, 2009 05:18-

A comment on the question "Songbird can't be dragged to other desktop under Gnome." in Songbird:
I don't know if it's been updated for the latest version of Songbird but MoreNative and NativeBird should take care of that nicely. (However, I haven't used either of them for a while so I don't know how their doing) – Carlos K, on August 23, 2009 05:23
