I had this idea too, so I wrote myself a daemon process that watches the clipboard. I then wrote a URL shortening program on my FTP server, and the daemon shortens all tinygrab URLs when they are copied to the clipboard.
That may give you an idea of how difficult it is. Worth it for me, probably not worth it for most people especially considering the support for URL shortening that almost every twitter client offers.-

Tinygrab idles at 7 - 13 % CPU usage.I've written programs that watch the file system before: they don't require nearly that much CPU to sit by and do nothing. I don't know if you're keeping a socket open, or just terrible at memory management, but I'd like to see this fixed. -

I programmed a daemon process to do this for me. If anyone wants it, let me know, and I'll set it up for any URL shortener with a simple API. -
