Could you please tell me the difference between syncing vs merging bookmarks?

I tried to merge but now I seem to have a mess. The folders don't contain the correct files but rather a jumble of completely unrelated files.

It looks like I can recover an older version but I don't understand how to be able to see the same bookmarks on 2 different computers.

Not sure what to list as the main issue here but they must be related.

I have been trying to get Flashplayer to work. When I try to play something that uses Flashplayer, it asks if I want to download Flashplayer but I have the latest version (10.0.22.87). I have repeatedly downloaded, uninstalled, then installed Flashplayer.

Meanwhile, when I open MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and perhaps others, I get the message "Please wait while Contribute starts to install." Eventually I get a message that it is looking for the feature it is trying to install on a CD or other disk. When I open Word, Excel, or Outlook again, I get the message "Word experienced a serious error the last time 'convert with flashplayer' was opened" and asks if I want to disable that addin.

I have Contribute 3, Office 2003, Windows XP.
