Educare started following the question "Can we keep responses to an embedded Seesmic video off the public timeline?" in Seesmic.
Cathy Knoll replied on July 19, 2008 01:48 to the idea "New feature request: send private videos to a group" in Seesmic:
I'd like to "stuff the ballot box" to raise this request to the top of the list! I was not aware of this feature request when I made the same request this morning. As I said in that message, the numbers of folks who will utilize Seesmic will expand exponentially once we can communicate to selected groups of people The possibilities include "invitation only" groups as well as groups that are wide open to individuals who have similar interests. These groups don't mind wide and open participation, but the members want to keep the conversation on topic, and are not interested in having the conversation splattered around Seesmic's public timeline. So, GO FOR IT! GROUPS ROCK!
Cathy Knoll replied on July 19, 2008 01:40 to the idea "Seesmic grows when more communities use it as a communication tool" in Seesmic:
THANKS for the prompt reply! I didn't see that request pop up as an option when I was drafting my request. But I'll check it out and add my vote.
(Howdy, Sonny! BTW - your fast-flying fingers tend to invert the letters "u" and "e" as in the words "request" and "question." But I love you no matter how you spell the words!)

Wow! Great list of ideas! And the details are very helpful! (BTW, hi mom!)
Fortunately, we are already working on private groups, so it's on its way. However, adding your vote to the original reqeust, will raise priority, and also allows you to be notified when we make the change.
Cathy Knoll replied on July 19, 2008 01:02 to the idea "Please remove the visual comments collage" in Seesmic:
I don't anticipate getting many video replies for these Autism VODcasts from the FAQautism community since most folks have low-tech capabilities and because they tend to prefer protecting the privacy of their friends with autism. On the occasions that an Autism VODcast post has received five or ten replies from the Seesmic community, the topic of the replies understandably moved off on a tangent. That has been VERY confusing to people in the FAQautism community.
Also, the collage of video replies really clutters up the screen. I realize that many other people like the collage because it visually illustrates the popularity of their post. But, like many other practical applications of Seesmic, the Autism VODcasts don't have that need.
I realize I was among those who requested that the Seesmic logo appear on the embedded Seesmic videos. But now the screen is very cluttered:
(1) Seesmic appears three times: above the video, in the bottom right of the video screen, AND below the video.
(2) The folding collage covers the bottom section of the screen
(3) buttons for "Auto Play Off" and "Reply" appear at the top of the screen.
All of that is to say that I would prefer that the collage of comments that shows up at the bottom third of the screen of the video be removed. Can the video replies appear below in comments just like the written comments? I'm not opposed to the posting of video comments - I just don't want the folding collage of video comments cluttering up the bottom of the screen. So, if there is no way to post the video comments in the comments section BELOW the video, I guess I would have to pick the option of only showing the video I selected
In a perfect world, I would also like to see "Auto Play Off" moved into the menu or to the bar below the screen.
I'm an advocate for CLEAN SCREENS!
Thanks!

Seesmic grows when more communities use it as a communication toolGreetings, Seesmic folks. I'm assuming Seesmic's mission is to become a universally common communication tool in addition to its current role as a place to come for conversation with Seesmic "regulars."
I am but a small fish in this mighty sea, but I would use Seesmic with many hundreds of people if I could interact with various groups of folks without the community interactions and conversations being posted on the public timeline.
Some of these potential Seesmic conversations would be with "invatation-only" groups e.g. (1) my teen Bible study group, (2) teachers at individual school districts where I'm contracted to consult, (3) a think-tank with my national professional association, (4) individuals who are enrolled in our on-line professional study courses, (5) my family scattered all over the United States, (6) a group of stay-at-home moms in North Carolina who want to brainstorm parenting issues and ideas for enriching the lives of their young children, and (7) many more.
Other Seesmic conversations open to individuals around the world who have a common interest, but who are not interested in posting their faces and identities on the broad Seesmic timeline, e.g. (1) families, teachers, therapists, and other interested in the well-being of individuals with autism, (2) individuals with autism, (3) support group for families of individuals with significant disabilities, (4) faith communities that want to welcome individuals with significant behavior issues, (5) music therapists encountering challenges in their practice, and (6) many more.
Please let me know if Seesmic already offers this option. If not, please consider this an "offical" urgent request. THANKS!

Cathy Knoll asked a question in Seesmic on July 18, 2008 13:43:
Can we keep responses to an embedded Seesmic video off the public timeline? When I embed a Seesmic video on FAQautism.com, folks respond via e-mail. I might be able to convince some folks to post Seesmic responses IF they could know that their responses were not going to be splashed on the public timeline of Seesmic. The FAQautism community is broad, diverse, non-confidential, and wide-open to people across the world. But most folks are not interested in splashing across the Seesmic timeline without the context of the original post.
Is there a way of having a "group" or something to keep that conversation available only to the FAQautism community?
Thank you.

Please remove the visual comments collageGood morning Seesmic. Thank you for developing the tool to allow me to post Seesmic videos several times a week on FAQautism.com. The visual, person-to-person contact is VERY well received by people across the world - parents, family members, teachers, therapists, medical professionals, individuals with autism, and others interested in the well-being of people with autism. One in every 150 children is diagnosed with autism, so MANY, MANY people are in need of practical resources. Embedded Seesmic video is a PERFECT communication tool for this diverse audience.
But most people participating in the conversation will not be sending Seesmic replies. Many do not have the camera and mic, and many want to respect the privacy of their family members or friends with autism.
So I am requesting that the visual collage of the responses be removed from the Seesmic posts on FAQautism.com. It clutters the image and confuses the folks who want to listen to the post.
Thank you.

Cathy Knoll reported a problem in Seesmic on June 30, 2008 11:51:
I still get a "connection lost" message when posting a videoGood morning, Seesmic. I realize this is old news, but just need to let you know this is still happening. After I record a video on Firefox or Safari, I receive a semi-transparent screen with a "connection lost" message. I can still see and hear the video replaying, but when I click "ok" (my only choice), it all disappears. This has been happening since Wednesday, June 25. On Sunday, June 29, I gained the capability of recording 10 second videos without getting the message.
I'm using a MacBook with all updates. I just checked my cable-based internet connection speed: it is 4471 for download and 245 for upload. I've not had any connection interruption issues with other programs, including file uploading on YouSendIt.com which is relatively sensitive. HELP!
Cathy Knoll replied on June 21, 2008 01:22 to the idea "Seesmic logo on videos and video comments on blogs" in Seesmic:
Greetings, Folks. THANKS for adding the Seesmic logo and raccoon. I realize you didn't need my message to know that needed to happen = just wanted to add a vote to the request. The VODcast I embedded on FAQautism.com today had lots of logos and other goodies. Some suggestions from my humble perspective:
1. Many folks with whom I communicate have modest computers, modest internet connections, and modest technical knowledge. Therefore, SIMPLICITY is the key.
2. It seems to me that the two buttons in the middle of the screen just add clutter and confuse the user.
3.I would recommend keeping the reply button in the upper left and delete the second reply button in the middle of the screen.
4. If a person wants to play the video again, they just click on the play arrow in the bar below the video screen, right? The "Play again" arrow in the middle of the screen just adds to the clutter and confuses the user.
Hmmmm....I seem to be repeating myself :-)
5. I don't know why there is a "Menu" button. I clicked on it and had NO CLUE what the message meant. Again - clutter and confusion.
6. Now the raccoon appears twice and the word "Seesmic" appears twice. It seems to me that the best way to avoid clutter and confusion is to keep the "less is more" philosophy in mind. (Personally, I like the raccoon in the upper left hand corner by the title and the Seesmic in the bottom right corner of the actual video. But I can also see value in other arrangements.)
7. Just for my own blog, the cool pictures of folks in the comment stream is unnecessary since users can see the conversation unfold when they click on "comments." Maybe I feel this way since I anticipate more folks will send text comments than will be brave enough to send a Seesmic video reply.
Okey dokey. I'll quit bugging you folks.
A comment on the idea "Sign language interpreter/Non verbal communication" in Seesmic:
hi tom just to be picayune the language to be added should be ASL [American Sign Language]. This would obviously be different from any of the other sign languages that may or may not be in use by Seesmic users. Thanks! – sean808080, on June 19, 2008 15:47

Seesmic logo on videos and video comments on blogsGreetings, Seesmic folks! I post VODcasts frequently on FAQautism.com. I record them on Seesmic and post on the public timeline so the Seesmic community can join the conversation. Then I embed them into FAQautism.com using Word Press. The process if very simple and works smoothly.
These ideas come to mind:
1. I'm surprised the Seesmic logo doesn't show up on the initial VODcast post on my blog. It would certainly be good marketing to add a small raccoon and the word "Seesmic.'
2. "Seesmic" shows up on the replies (comments), but no raccoon. Seems to me that it would be good to "teach" the public the meaning of that visual logo.

Make "ask a question" button more prominentHELP! Except for geeks, users are at a loss when it comes to asking questions. I use a MacBook. We just bought one for my 80-year-old mother in law. These are not shabby computers. But the links on the bottom of Seesmic do not show up unless I scroll down. In my opinion, it is not intuitive to scroll down. It looks like the whole page is on the screen....but those links are not visible. So I didn't find them until one day I accidentally saw Thomas in a Seesmic post pointing down to the bottom of the screen.
If I were in charge :-), I would put them up above the "television screen" on the same level as the orange "Welcome to Seesmic" phrase. Or put them DIRECTLY below the "embed" and link boxes.
Thanks! + Cathy Knoll

Great conversation! I think there might be two different ideas here:
1. Adding signed languages to the list of languages in Seesmic.
2. Adding a text field to the Seesmic interface so that people could add text comments to video posts.
The 1st idea already exists on this existing thread.
The 2nd one already exists on this existing thread.
Otir replied on May 17, 2008 21:21 to the idea "Sign language interpreter/Non verbal communication" in Seesmic:
Cathy, the deaf community has been present on Seesmic for many weeks (even months?) now, and it is simply growing, so that you probably got your attention caught at a moment when someone was signing in the timeline. There definitely are many conversing with other signing Seesmic users and probably testing the platform.
It has been asked here that in the "language" section it can be added ASL or SL for "signed language", in case someone using FSL for instance (for French Signed Language) or any other sign language could select their language options appropriately.
I personnally think it is up to anyone who understands (or not) signed language, to manage to engage if they wish to do so. The same, in my opinion, with any other language that we don't (or do) understand but do not master (Korean or Turkish, or else).
It's a great platform for everyone, isnt' it?
Cathy Knoll replied on May 16, 2008 16:13 to the idea "Sign language interpreter/Non verbal communication" in Seesmic:
Howdy! Actually, I wasn't envisioning an interpreter on staff, but rather someone in the general, public Seesmic community who would take a look at signed posts, to continue the conversation if they desired to do so, and to post a verbal video post when appropriate to help those of us who are not fluent in sign language understand the conversation. I'm assuming a whole community of folks fluent in ASL will crop up and have ongoing conversations now that visual communication is possible. YEA, Seesmic!
In my humble opinion, It would be a futile undertaking for Seesmic to get into the business of interpreting everything for everyone. For example, because of cultural gaps, I don't understand some of the "hip" posts and topics on Seesmic.
