You have my sympathies, mate.
All I can suggest is that you use SamKnows Mapping to find out which ADSL services are available to you at your new address (and a rough idea of likely connection speeds).
Best of luck!

I'm not sure where you've got the idea that they ever were 'committed' to extending their cable reach. There's occasionally talk of replacing the analogue service (not many areas) with digital and maybe adding some newly-built estates but I think that's as far as it goes, I'm afraid: just talk!
VM are a cash-strapped company barely able to afford senior management's performance bonuses, let alone investing to increase the footprint.

Just for the benefit of anyone else having problems with VM Broadband.
From June 1st, 2008, VM scrapped their expensive telephone support line and reverted to the previous numbers -- Now you can call:
151 from your Virgin Media phone (absolutely free) or 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.
Probably the best place to get help/advice with problems with Virgin Media's services (TV, phone, broadband and mobile) is from the Cable Forum website.
ceedee replied on July 17, 2008 18:33 to the question "Can customers request a static IP from Virgin Media" in Virgin Media:
Unfortunately, VM don't offer static IP addresses, not even to business accounts (who have to make do with 'sticky' IPs that "can" change, tho' very infrequently).
I'd agree that they'd make a lucrative extra service for VM to provide so I'd presume that there's some limitation in Cisco's UBR firmware that makes it impossible.
Shame, eh?

It certainly has been frustrating waiting for updates.
However, I have a shrewd suspicion that Google will shortly (weeks not months) release a revitalised suite of apps that'll better incorporate mail, im, voip, presence and, for those in the US at least, a 'switchboard' (ie. GrandCentral).

Recommend you don't run too far from GTalk just yet!

I too have found Gmail's IMAP a little slow at times but nowhere near *that* slow!
Give them a while to sort out the problems -- after all, it's still in Beta.
:-D
On a Nokia S60 phone I was able to set the frequency that my phone checked the server under Automatic Retrieval settings.
(I know that makes no sense for push email but there ya go!)
