charlieok replied on July 25, 2008 21:16 to the question "Is all the code on zembly public?" in zembly:
Thanks for the reply. I am definitely in favor of sharing code that is sufficiently "general use" - A lot of companies, notably yahoo, facebook and google, have been doing this with things such as YUI, Thrift, and all kinds of other stuff. I think it helps the community immensely when you can reduce duplication of effort, get more eyeballs on any one piece of code, etc.
On the other hand, if it were completely public, it seems like somebody could just come along and hit a 'clone' button to clone my entire project, and then push it out as their own app that does more or less exactly the same thing and competes for exactly the same userbase. That doesn't seem like a very attractive proposition for a developer of social applications.
charlieok asked a question in zembly on July 22, 2008 16:24:
Is all the code on zembly public? Is any code I write on zembly automatically publicly viewable? Or is it possible to designate which parts of an app's codebase are visible outside the app's approved developers?
charlieok reported a problem in Hertz on July 19, 2008 19:12:
Service that HertzI arrived at a Hertz location in Fort Lauderdale earlier today, where my brother had a reservation for a rental car for the next few days. My brother had talked to the man at this Hertz location earlier in the morning to confirm the reservation. When we came to get the car this same man told us, without the slightest hint of sympathy, that we were going to be mad and that he had no cars. This "customer service" agent had clearly not gone through any trouble to figure out what we could do. When we asked him what our options were (such as a refund or going to another location for a car) he said there was nothing he could do. Meanwhile, the rest of our group had a plane to catch, so we had to just leave without the car we needed. We then called the customer service line to try and figure out if we could get a refund or a car from another location and the phone customer service was similarly unhelpful. We got a person on the phone but were then transferred to an office that was closed. We never got the needed car and now have to go through the efforts with our credit card and insurance companies to make sure no charges go through.

Very cool! Hopefully I'll have some time to play around with this... – charlieok, on May 19, 2008 21:05

I discovered getsatisfaction by finding it through BrightKite's site and it looks to me like a really cool service. Maybe I partly think that because I thought of it a couple weeks before I discovered that it had been done already (and very well).
The main difference between my idea and getsatisfaction was that I envisioned each user getting 100 "chips" to distribute among their favorite ideas (and having the chips slowly leak back into the "unplaced" bin to keep votes from getting stale), so that the most desired features would float to the top. Perhaps that isn't necessary, but I still like it.
I was curious whether getsatisfaction offers an API to tie into their system from another interface, but this topic may have answered that question...

List of popular places near me?I've found myself wondering, what are some good restaurants or hangouts near me? I think it would be cool to call up a list of the "most popular locations near me" based on some metric along the lines of "most unique visits in the somewhat recent past (say, month)". That could be a cool way to discover new places to go that I might not have known about.-

More control needed over what posts to facebook newsfeedI think more fine-grained control is needed about where items are posted. I added the friendfeed facebook app, and it seems really well-done.
I like the idea of having things in friendfeed automatically post to the facebook newsfeed. But I don't want *all* of it to go to the facebook newsfeed. I am very conscious about not spamming my friends, and I don't feel like everything I put on friendfeed should go to places like facebook. (One reason is that the friendfeed crowd is much more interested in web/tech kinds of subjects than the much bigger facebook crowd, which includes all these people I knew in high school etc).
I think if facebook users want to see everything on my friendfeed, they can look in the profile box, or on my friendfeed page. But it shouldn't all be broadcast to the facebook newsfeed.
charlieok reported a problem in Fluid on April 30, 2008 02:42:
Gmail printing doesn't format correctlyI set up my grandma with Fluid on gmail. Unfortunately, we had to switch back because she likes to print out emails and printing them through Fluid messed up the formatting on the page. The text ran off the end and was partly cut off before wrapping back onto the next line.
charlieok shared an idea in Mint.com on April 30, 2008 02:37:
Complete Financial PictureI'd like to see a complete personal financial picture. Not just some bank accounts and credit cards, but all of my most important accounts. Mortgage, car loan, student loans, 401k, Roth IRA and pension would be my list. I think this hits most of the major ones most people deal with.
mint just feels incomplete, like "just part of the story" without this.
