In Ubuntu it suffices to make a link for just /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so (default location in Ubuntu) in the Songbird application folder's plugins directory (Songbird/plugins).
By using a link, the plugin gets automatically updated when the main Flash plugin package gets updated by the package manager.
I did it manually here and works like a charm.
Of course, when the developers make the app detect the plugin automatically, this is no longer needed.-

Just like Michael said, Songbird performance ultimately depends on the developer efforts and future releases.
Your best bet at the moment, while waiting for those optimizations to come in, is to have only the minimum necessary of Add-ons installed. The more you have, the slower it is. -
