That is the ocean off of Africa. Zoom out and you will find what you are looking for.
The problem is covered in the topic "Initial map display not correct"

Apple says they are working on a fix for the problem.

Hatos's workaround seems like a good idea until Apple fixes the problem (I got a reply from Apple, and they say it a known issue). However, by adding N/E, etc. the name for the pin is just the GPS coordinates. The original way also gives the name of the place.
For example, in the case of the White House, you get the zip code with
http://maps.google.com/?q=38.897661,-...
but the wrong initial map display
http://maps.google.com/?q=N38.897661,...
gives you the correct initial map, but just the GPS coordinates in the pin note

Initial map display not correct. For some reason, positions I send to a iPhone 3G defaults to someplace off of Africa when I send a link to the map. The pin is at the right position, but I have to scroll half way around the world to find it. The same link shows up correctly in Safari on a Mac. I am in Japan and here is a location that was causing problems:
http://maps.google.com/?q=36.318378,1... I had the same problem with other locations, so it was not a one-off thing. Can you fix this issue?
