chuckdub reported a problem in Facebook on November 03, 2009 03:14:
Lacking Support to unavailable account for permissions errors and site maintenanceThere's a bit of a lack of support to us from the Facebook.
Random inaccessibility and permissions to Facebook since Saturday (or sooner) through to Thursday from multiple computers and browsers.
I finally received at least a Login-page dialogue saying "your account is unavailable due to site maintenance"
• Inability to log in due to a "Site Maintenance" error message
• Permission error for commenting or viewing other's pages, walls, albums, photos and chats
• Missing friends from the Friends page and chat
• Errors trying to access Inbox
and all of these issues are given to inaccurate fix periods, lack of any progress report and insufficient communication.
It's just ridiculous in that it wasn't communicated NEARLY well enough by any sort of advanced notice or even a CURRENT notice as to what was occurring.
regardless of the capacity to respond personally or streamlining the communication, this needs and ought to be communicated to those involved, and to a degree where they are fully aware of what is happening to their information, access, account and the accurate time frames of said happenings.
And considering that they often DO have all of our personal information down to emails, phones, mobile provider and the like makes it easy to alternatively contact. And just as simple for Facebook to request to gain legal permission/consent to do so in such cases within the constraints of the Facebook domain itself.
Their disrespect toward the information and media of ours that they store as content for their site by this inaccessibility to our content and failure to communicate such is rather unacceptable.
I expect more communication for the exchange of our personal information as leverage to bring our peers to their website and to keep us [facebook users] looking at it to get supported by advertising to the growing masses kept at the website for hours.
Specifics of all the problems i was having:
The combination that it (walls, profiles, and feeds) would work for me randomly with and without a friends' list and permission to view their profile content,
and sporadically show my friends' walls,
and then say that the friend only shares certain information with everyone, and that, perhaps all of a sudden, i was not one of them. (or with anybody?)
then my chat list goes empty of contacts;
or i try to chat with my sister in France to finally see how she is.
I ask her if she's having a similar problem,
but she's not.
only to find that my conversation is then cut off from her and that i don't have permission as her friend (oh brother) to contact her (via chat, profile, posts, comment response or Facebook Mail.)
So my alternative was having to wait and hope she would sign on in another communication way such as a messenger or video chat client.
then i had a performance with a guy whom i just met that found me on facebook, but his phone had died on the day of our show, and so he messaged me on facebook to tell me that and how exactly to get there,
so it was also upsetting and made me feel horrible at the inconvenience when i couldn't reach him to tell him i was ill yet ask him where to meet him after the first show for the location of the next.
Facebook failed me there.
so even AFTER the show had occurred, and i was able to get into my inbox, and receive his message, i wasn't able to respond to apologize to him for not getting to know how or why i didn't appear.
it's not that I'm blocked since i still randomly have access on my wall which shows my old posts and occasionally others' posts.
and it's not a blanket exchange (considering there are multiple facebook servers that likely all get serviced at different uncommunicated interval periods) so all night long the rest of my friends and sister in France were having normal functionality and i would be left to not get a hold of them either urgently, to catch up on what communication is due within the time frame I've got, or just to rest the troubled mind.
The bother is that we can only get to them via this third party site (GetSatisfaction)--which we may love--yet they have no immediate obligation to communicate or show something for it.
And I'm dubious that this counts as a means of directly communicating to us when the site is partially/incrementally down and we need to be told why.
the automated account temporarily unavailable prompt, the lack within http://www.facebook.com/help.php , and the fact that it doesn't resolve or communicate within the website's bounds is all disconcerting.
Personally, i felt the worst and got most frustrated when it would tease me with all the information that it would load onto a website, allow me to type in the comment, and then fail to post in the wall or email that i spent so much thought, effort and time trying to get to.
at first consideration i had thought it was an error related to how just prior I 'Facebook Connected' to Scribd.com,
until i received the maintenance login error message.
But regardless of whether it was maintenance, a random error, or Facebook connect,
Facebook,
if they couldn't fix it,
the least of even an advance or concurrent email warning or any other form to notify of what they plan to do to our account or the servers, and the ETA of completion could have saved any negative opinion or the really bad experience with their product.
It should not be such a power so easily neglected.

A comment on the question "Facebook Site Maintenance over 36 Hours!" in Facebook:
I am with you James.
This is extremely ridiculous to me, and I have some similar Aspie things going on as you do, and was incessantly and repeatedly looking at the site trying to figure out why it was telling me i don't have permission for talking to anybody.
I can't post to my brother's wall and it says i'm not allowed to chat with my sister in France.
Five AM before i was able to get a hold of her, relax and go to sleep. – chuckdub, on October 25, 2009 20:07
