Hi Rachel, I am trying to insert the GoogleGadget "Google Spreadsheet editor into a PBwiki. The gadget's configuration page asks for a "Login Code". If I mght ask, where does that code come from and how do I get one? Thank you. C

Yeah... sorry about that. I think that I was able to put in some HTML tags directly before but they seem to have disappeared now...

I had a similar problem when trying to add a PayPal button... I couldn't get it to add HTML in the new page editor. It just seemed to freeze up at that gray screen.

Try switching to "Classic Mode" and pasting in your code from there. It worked for me and my PayPal button. :)

That's really weird. Does anyone else have access to your wiki? Could they, or you at a previous time, signed up for one? I'm trying to think of other ways this could have happened, and it might have been signed up for under another google email, or maybe you have a google API key from something else, but none of these things really make sense.

Do you have another wiki? Could you try doing the same thing with that one?

This is what one resource in the Mapki Discussion group FAQ (http://mapki.com/wiki/Read_This_First) says:

My API key doesn't work

* Check that you are not using IE7beta1. It doesn't support API key checking.
* Make sure that you typed the URL correctly when you registered.
* Make sure that you didn't type in the URL of an individual web page. It's usually best to use the URL of the whole domain. You can register an individual directory, but you can't register an individual page.
* If you registered a directory, rather than the whole domain, then remember that directory names are CaSe SensiTivE.
* If you created your page in FrontPage, check that it hasn't changed your &s into &. FP tries to be helpful, but actually breaks it. The way to get round it is to tell FP that you want & and it will change it to &. The guys that wrote FP never considered the possibility that you would enter the line correctly in the first place.
* If there's a possibility that you've got some clever redirection trickery that's changing the name of the page, type javascript:alert('http://'+window.location.host) into the address bar while your page is displayed. That's the domain name that the API sees, so that's the one that you need to register.

If none of these things is the issue, you might try just asking in the Map API Discussion group - http://groups.google.com/group/Google...

I searched through some of their archives, and lots of people have seen your error message, but the ones I looked at all had one of the reasons listed above as why it didn't work.

I have a feeling I mistyped that - Yeah, looking at my source, I meant to type from the head tag to the /body tag. I'm sorry about that.

I'm still having no luck. After I insert the html and click on the Finish button, pbwiki stops responding. The grey screen never goes away.

My GoogleMap code has the GPS data in the body tags also; the code does NOT reside JUST in head tags. So could we do this ... could you try to install code from the Google Map API documentation that includes code in both the head and body tags?

I've tried the instructions above, and now when I open my page I get a popup error that says "The Google maps API key used on this website was registered for a different site." I registered my API using my name.pbwiki.com address, and when that didn't work I registered again with the full address to the page I want to put a map on...

Any ideas why this is happening?

Copy everything from < head > to < /head > and paste it into your wiki directly. That was the first thing I tried, and I was actually kind of surprised, but it worked.

I mean, after hours of deliberation and research, I have discovered your answer!

I think he had written out the tags and the browser thought they were HTML so it tried to use them. I'm going to go through the same steps and see if I can figure out which tags to use - I just asked Joel and he didn't remember which tags they were off the top of his head, and apparently his official process was to just try things until they worked :)

Which tags are you referring to here: "Copy everything between the tag and the tag". I have tried between the html-html tags, between the body-body tags, and between just inside the body-body tags. The same thing happens every time - I follow your instructions, click the Next button, it changes to a FInish button, I click that and nothing happens - pbwiki stops responding. I wait for a long time, but pbwiki does nothing further.

Luigi, you can get a GoogleMap API key here

It is a long sequence of letters and numbers and you will put that key into a line in your GoogleMap html. You can write your own GoogleMap html or you can have a mapping service generate it for you. A good one is GPSVisualizer.com. I used GPSVis to generate the map code for this page:

just to make your great directions even more clear ...
When you say .."to generate an API key for your PBwiki" ... are you talking about the HTML code which would be generated by Google Maps .. for the sake of ... "embedding" such code ... in someone else's web site ... ??
I believe non geeky people .. like myself .. are more familiar with the notion of "code to be embedded" (as used by the very popular YouTube) ..
"API key" sounds like a double mystery to me, I'm afraid .. ;-)

Cindy, I looked into this for you.

To do this you will need to generate an API key for your PBwiki. After you generate your key, you will see an example webpage with some HTML for you to cut and paste. Copy everything between the tag and the tag. After you've copied that HTML, go to your PBwiki and edit a page. Click on the "Insert Plugin" button, move your mouse over "PBwiki magic", a menu will open, click on "HTML" in that menu. Paste the HTML that you copied from Google into that box. Click "Next >", then click "Finish".

This might not work in all web browsers because of the way that the Javascript is called. (It probably shouldn't be called from a BODY tag). Let me know if it works for you!
