The Compose button is public (yellow bubble), but if you hit the Reply button, it'll either be a public reply (purple bubble) or a private reply (blue bubble), depending on the situation. It's a little confusing right now, but it's something we're working on.
If you're familiar with Twitter shortcuts, you can also send Public Replies by starting your post with '@USERNAME' and Private Replies by starting 'D USERNAME' -- the bubble will chance color accordingly.

Suggestion number one is interesting. We've found that performance can really suffer with more tweets onscreen at once. It's a balancing act, but we're always working on it.
Number two is actually impossible :( The Twitter API (the thing Twitter gives us to let Twinkle talk to their service) doesn't allow you to change your name. – Chris Clark, on July 31, 2008 18:28

A comment on the problem "What's a kilometre?" in Tapulous:
The UK gets KMs because the phone tells us the UK is a metric country. It's half right: the UK uses the metric system *except* for miles, so we'll have to work around that in a future version of Twinkle. In the meantime, the temporary fix is to use the United States region format. – Chris Clark, on July 30, 2008 22:03
