i've created a testcase for you:
1) download
http://elasticserver.com/server/12921...
2) login to elastic mui
click updates
choose procps
click update
3) elastic mui just hangs/spins

so could you please change both your 8.04 and 8.10 kernel masters to ones that dont require PAE on the cpu since my vmware server cpus only have support for the following flags
flags :
fpu vme de pse tsc msr mce cx8 sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss tm pbe up bts est tm2
note this is not an ubuntu issue since i am running 8.04 natively on this machine as my host os for vmware server
