Kathleen makes a good point. She picked the most natural phrasing for people to talk to Sandy and have her create and update lists. Compare the examples below. (Example #1 and #5 is what was previously suggested and are there for comparison purposes.)

(Notice the use of a period in most examples. It might be possible to use a period instead of the word "list" to denote the end of the name.)

For creation:
#! Jott/email: > remember Angel Food Cake recipe list eggs and milk
#2 Jott: > create a list named Angel Food Cake recipe. Add eggs and milk.
#3 SMS: > d s r Angel Food list +eggs + milk
#4 SMS: > d s r list Angel Food. +eggs +milk

For update:

Thinking even further ahead, Sandy could be made to recognize item names, not just list names. If this could happen, then using a period instead of the word "list" to denote the end of the name would make sense. For example: Sandy could assume that the list/event/reminder/todo name starts after the "update" and ends at the first occurrence of a period or "add" or "remove", etc.

(The hope is that the update command would not need to use the keyword "list". Creating a new event/reminder/list might need a different syntax or keyword. Especially for creating a list. Sandy needs to know that you want to create a *list* and not just an event. I like examples #2 and #4. They include use of the keyword "list" even though it's not used as a delimiter for the name.)

1. I love Kevin1's suggestion for jotting a list to Sandy, specifically this method:
> Sandy, create a list named groceries. Add eggs and milk and butter and cheese.

2. For jotting a list update to Sandy, I would prefer this method, which is more natural to say and is more similar to the create list method:
> Sandy, update the list named groceries. Add paper towels and bread. Remove cheese.

In the above examples, clues to Sandy are: "create" or "update", "a list named..." or "the list named...", and "add" or "remove". The only delimiter needed is "and".

I would also like to be able to have lists with multiple words in the name, if you can make it work.

1) Rael what you have suggested (using "list" and "and" as delimiters) does not work on the Jott-Sandy interface. Is it implemented already, or are we discussing future functionality?

2) Ito the actual preferred functionality:
2.1) I like "list as being the delimiter as suggested by Rael, i.e. remember Groceries _list_ x _and_ y. This sound more normal and I can live without having a list name ending in list. It's a double implication anyway.
2.1) #1: how do we say this? "reference"/"hash"/pound" or just "one"?

Well it could work, I would just have to send two jotts. It would just be nice to be able to have it work all as one.

Using email, you can do it in two steps. First, you create an item with:

remind me the picnic Aug 2

then, once you receive a confirmation from Sandy, you reply:

remind me jul 30

That way you will get an appointment on Aug 2 with a reminder on jul 30.

I guess that solution will not work with Jott.

That's a great idea. I think using "add" and "remove" is perfect. I also like using "and" to separate items. I have some concerns though, especially over list names. How does Sandy handle list names with multiple words? Or names that contain the word "list"?

First, how to create a list through Jott. Second, how to update a list through Jott.

1) In your idea, is the word "list" used after the name of the list? Maybe it should be used before the name of the list? Can the word "list" be part of the name of the list? I already have several lists named things like "birthday list" and "grocery_list". How would I update them? When we create a list is the word "list" unusable as part of the name?

2) If we're using Jott, we can't say "update #1". There is no #1. There is nothing to reply to. Should we use "list" (before or after the name of the list?) to tell Sandy they type of thing to update? Or should we just use the name of the list?

Quite honestly, I'd love your (the collective you too!) input on this.

I've considered some of:

Here "list" is the hint to Sandy that there's a list coming and "and" is a way of separating out list items.

* update #1 _add_ lettuce _remove_ cheese

Here "add" is the stand-in for * or +* (who'd say "star" anyway?) and "remove" is the stand-in for -*.

While we try to anticipate what would best balance simplicity and grokability with pure power, the way learn best is by understanding what you're trying to do — and how you're trying to do it.

Hey am very glad that you guys are working on extending the JOTT functionality since I use that quite a lot.

In general though I am having a problem jotting a list. like a groceries list with no reminder. How would I say this to jott if it is already supported? And if not, do you plan to add support:
