With all public transport related systems, including parking you should be able to use most legal denominations (i except £50's may be pushing it) and, in the case of parking receive change. Or at the very least they should except plastic so that for most people having the correct change becomes a non-issue.

So many times I've had to not use the bus because I had no cash or just a £20 and took my car instead. It's ridiculous.
