I was wrong, it wasn't Ember that had this problem in an earlier version... it happened in the first version of Distant Shore and the programmers fixed it. It has something to do with the semi-colon meaning 'end of string' or 'end of line' or something in the programming language. When the user has a semi-colon, it has to be treated with an 'escape' character so the programming language doesn't see it.

"Refresh conversation" buttonA small button that forces a screen refresh would be very useful. I find that on all Campfire clients, not just Ember, when the wireless signal isn't strong, there are times when other people's words aren't reported even though there's no obvious disruption in service.
On a browser on the Mac, hitting the "reload page" button or key-combination fixes things. In Ember, I find I have hit the hardward 'home' button on the iPhone and then go back into the Ember Campfire room to accomplish a screen refresh. A "reload" button would be useful.

v2.0 - Semi-colon in message truncates that messageI haven't updated to 2.1 or 2.1.1 because I don't want auto-rotation of the screen. I've just noticed that version 2.0 is regularly truncating postings that contain a semi-colon....
The scarey bit is that it *looks* as though the text goes through while you're in the conversation, but if you "leave the room" and come back or open the conversation on another machine, you find that only the part of the message before the semi-colon appears to anyone but you. The semi and everything after it disappears.
I think you folks had this in an earlier version and sorted it. It looks to be back in 2.0. If you've fixed it in 2.1 or 2.1.1, sorry for troubling you.

I see 2.1.1 is out.... has this update made rotation optional? Can I upgrade yet?
If not and you're still considering this a possibility, can you change the status of this post from "Question" with a question mark icon to "Idea" with a lightbulb icon... or be marked "Under Consideration" rather than "Answered"?
Thanks, Jonathan. Still using 2.0 and very glad to have bought Ember.
A comment on the idea "Ember Should (Optionally) Ask for Password at Launch" in Overcommitted, LLC:
That hits one of the scenarios I mentioned: losing the phone; but not the other one: someone else borrows my iPhone "for a minute" to make a call or look at the games.
I'd just like the same options as on the website version of Campfire... you can tell the browser to remember how to log you in, or you can log in each time.

A comment on the question "Is Screen Rotate Optional?" in Overcommitted, LLC:
Yes please! I have to avoid upgrading until then... which means I can't hit the "update all" button in iTunes but have to do one at a time.
Thanks for considering it! All the Apple apps have a built-in (though clumsy) way of allowing sideways viewing... rotate the screen 180degrees in two stages and you get a sideways landscape view. Not ideal but better than nothing.
Thanks, Jonathan. – conrad, on August 03, 2009 13:41
conrad asked a question in Overcommitted, LLC on August 03, 2009 11:11:
Is Screen Rotate Optional?I'm a bit frightened to load the new version of Ember which I'm told allows landscape text entry. I often use the iPhone while lying on my side in bed. Programs like InstaPaper allow me to block screen rotation, while other programs I can't use easily because the accelerometer doesn't realilze that my head has rotated with the iPhone.
Is there an option in the new version of Ember NOT to allow rotation and to keep in portrait even when you're laying down? If not, could we have that, please?
conrad replied on August 03, 2009 11:04 to the question "Doesn't update unless I leave room or Reload" in Overcommitted, LLC:
All Campfire clients, even web browsers on desktop machines, appear to lose messages at times, or to change the order of two lines submitted. Your browser window (and Ember) tend to show what you've sent... refreshing the browser will show you what the other person is likely to see.
It would be nice, then, if Ember's display had a "refresh" button, to save us having to hit the iPhone main button and coming back in to Ember to refresh the display.

conrad replied on April 07, 2009 21:01 to the problem "no updates to a chatroom while I'm inside!" in Overcommitted, LLC:
Latest update: still happening to me and to a chat-friend in the USA. It doesn't seem to be only when we're in motion... can't predict when it'll happen.
To resolve it, it is not necessary to log out of the room and back in again (though that works)... It clears up if I merely hit the iPhone hardware button, tap the Ember icon (seeing that I'm still officially in the chat room) and go back into it.
In other words, all that's necessary seems to be redrawing the chat... maybe you could add a button that would refresh the thing without having to leave the program?
Wish I could figure out for you a pattern for when it happens, but last night it happened with me sitting still in a room with a wifi connection that had never been a problem before.
conrad replied on April 03, 2009 07:44 to the problem "no updates to a chatroom while I'm inside!" in Overcommitted, LLC:
Just a note to say that this problem is still very much with me and my fellow chatters, even in 1.01 (which has allowed me to work on 3G).
It is SO frustrating when it happens. Last night I was typing and typing and the person I was talking to was like "Are you still there? Maybe you had to attend to a phone call?" And I feel like typing in all caps: Log out and back in! I'm here! ... it was like being in a coma must be!
You mention the similar situation where a person is logged in on two machines using the same credentials.... This isn't like that. The affected person sees what they themselves type perfectly, just cannot see a thing that the other people in the room type... until they leave and come back... then the other people's comments appear, normally intertwined with their own where they should have been visible in the first place.
It makes you so paranoid in every conversation where people don't respond immediately and unambiguously.

I get this problem too ... every few days. One other person chatting, only iPhone to iPhone. I *think* it happens when I move around with the iPhone -- as if I go out of network range for a second and Ember no longer synchs properly. The other person sees what I type, but I see nothing of their until I leave and come back. It's happened on the other end, to my chat partner as well once or twice, but it's happened to me 4 or 5 times.
I'm on Wifi... I can't get Ember to work when I'm on 3G, but that's another Topic.-

Ember Should (Optionally) Ask for Password at LaunchI love how Ember works. But I'd dearly love the option of having it work LESS smoothly in one way:
Right now, if I lose my iPhone or if an acquaintance asks to try it, anyone can go right into my campfires with a couple of taps.
Could you please make it an option for Ember to remember ID but ask for password at each launch?
A comment on the problem "No more Sandy via Twitter in the UK" in I want Sandy:
Thanks for your reply, Chris!
It's not just their customer service. I've searched the O2 site looking for M-Mail, mmail and 'mmail.co.uk' and the searches come up empty! Very peculiar.
I did find some pages about it using google to search the web:
http://singlepoint.mavadatest.co.uk/m...
http://www.dcs.lancs.ac.uk/iono/auror...
I can't see going this way though... asking myself every message to Sandy ... 'Is this really worth another 10p rather than just setting myself an alarm?'
Maybe someone will make an alarmed memo pad for the iPhone. Bye bye, Sandy. – conrad, on August 15, 2008 10:05
