Ok - I think I have it solved, the problem is that I am a total Mac noob. Turns out that Songbird was telling the truth when it suggested I check permissions - I had assumed that because my user had write permissions that it would be sufficient - but I guess Songbird counts as a separate user, and all other users only had read access. I've changed the permissions for my whole music folder so that all users have write access and so far, so good.

Update: looks like I broke out the champagne too soon. Problem just recurred on another file and Finder says that everyone has write access. Grrr.

Audiograbber for Windows. However, last night I was able to write metadata to a bunch of mp3s I have ripped - so there doesn't seem to be a pattern between source of the mp3 and write problems.

Ok, I've managed to replicate the problem with at least 1 mp3 I definitely ripped myself (so can 100% vouch for that file being a real mp3).

I will double check - how would I verify whether the underlying file is m4a or mp3? Songbird is able to read the existing tags just fine - not sure if that is indicative of anything.

Sorry - songbird.metadata.artwork.enablewriting, songbird.metadata.enablewriting and songbird.metadata.ratings.enablewriting are the only enablewriting fields and all are set to true.

Also, there is no apparent consistency about which files I can write metadata to - for example, I can successfully save ratings for some songs but not for others. Same with changing the artist name, etc.

More often than not Songbird reports unable to write metadata to files - and these are mp3s, not oggs or m4as. I seem to have write access to the files. I'm using Snow Leopard and Songbird 1.4.0b2. I haven't been able to discern a pattern for which files will successfully write and which will not.
