i didn't recognized the problem because i was checking on several band name where the sorting was fine.
Even non-english names were handled (Die Toten Hosen) so i assumed that the -sort version of the name was used.

This problem is better recognizable on artists like Bob Dylan or Tom Lehrer and such that we except to have sorted not by their name but from their surmane since the -sort tag says "Dylan, Bob"

Now i can agree and add myself to the list of peoples who would like to see this change in SB :)

i think that SB already uses the -sort alternatives of artist and albumartist.
in my collection, "The Streets" are between "Streetlight Manifesto" and "Stretch Arm Strong", because they are sorted as "Streets, The"

now I'm using SB 1.4.1b1 but I'm pretty sure it was already the default behavior on 1.2

i'm not a big fan of firefox/thunderbird but i have to admit that songbird it's the best media player in town and works great on w7 :)

you already can sort by album artist in the list and filter pane visualization, i think it was introduced in version 1.2

edit: agree, musicbrainz is a great tool and should be supported/used more widely

no i don't use the import or export features for itunes nor the music management. I just setup songbird to watch a network drive, where my music collection resides, for changes.

This are the addons i've installed:

i think they are pretty much the ones that comes with the installation package.

Probably it's the watch folders that keeps the application running and it's a shame that we (users) don't have a clear view on the interface of what songbird is doing (i'm talking about a little bar on the status to inform us when he's scanning folders or updating collection or wiping drives) or have the ability to manually stop/start this processes

and just to add some details to motivate the bump:
it keeps happening with 1.4.1b1 1357 after a clean install and a clean profile with only the "default" addons installed.
The process stays in the list for a while, like 30min or more, sucking up resources (40-50% of the cpu and 90-100mb or ram) without doing anything (i hope).
During that time, trying to launch songbird results in a nice window alerting me that another instance is already running.

As far as i know, this problems doesn't exist on x32 systems or at leas doesn't show up on my other W7 machine which is x32.

idem, no problem on W7 final x32 and W7 final x64

well ... no problem launching it. lots of problem executing and closing it :(

this "trick" showed up a lot of interesting properties and mostly solved the problem.
Too bad that i can't see, for example, the "mood" property or the custom ones (Musicbrainz put in the metadata a lot of custom tags).

Now if we only can unlock those ones and have a nice panel to configure what fields to show in the panels .... that would be great

this will be easy to accomplish with a smart playlist IF we can have access to extra id3 tags like mood, comments and such. Even better if we (users) can setup arbitrary tags

I have to admit it, this release is very fast!
I can feel again the fun of scrolling my library in search of lost artists
now I'm gonna test the other features too :)

edit: still broken ipod support but hey, it is so promising that i can wait a bit more ;)

I really really (really!) like this one!
I was amazed by the flexibility of mediamonkey when it comes to metadata (the "playlists" it can create are amazing!) and i would like to see more of that approach on songbird, really!

I use MusicBrainz and Last.fm Plus as well to tag my tracks so i agree on those custom tags, but i would like to have the ability to define my own filtering/sorting tags whichever they are

just changing the album art configuration in the about:config page doesn't work. you also need to wipe your collection and reload every track
i spent hours before figuring this out :(

btw: the album art preference panel in the 1.4b3 works like a charm and i'm really happy about it
