RSS was originally intended for notifications, so using the event's future start date as the item date causes problems with many feed readers, which is why Upcoming used the event's creation date as the default.
You can override this default by adding "?sort=start-date-asc" to the end of the RSS URL. More information about this feature here:

You can subscribe to your events, your friend's events, or export any individual event to Google Calendar by clicking the "Subscribe" button on the relevant pages. For your own events, the Subscribe button is on this page.-
