My guess is that this is fixed in the latest WIC codecs for Windows 7. You can try the beta of the "Platform Update for Windows Vista" which is now available: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/de...

Can you put a link to the image into http://seadragon.com and let us know if it works? If not, post the code back here and we can try to investigate the image.

A comment on the problem "blue screen" in Microsoft Live Labs:
Dell has two driver updates for this configuration, but they may already be installed:
http://support.dell.com/support/downl...
http://support.dell.com/support/downl...
If that doesn't work, you can try the driver direct from ATI:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_cat...
Let us know if that fixes it! – Dan Cory, on December 11, 2008 18:12

We'll try to speak "solving blue screen for dummies".
What operating system do you have? Windows XP or Vista?
What video card do you have? If you don't know, right click on the desktop. In Vista, choose Personalize, then Display Settings. In XP, choose Display Settings. You should have a dialog with a monitor tab and there is a drop down that says "monitor name on video card name". Post that string (a picture of the dialog would be fine). – Dan Cory, on December 09, 2008 23:37

What video card do you have? I suspect it is not supported. There is case where you get a crash as soon as Photosynth starts up, instead of the appropriate warning message.

Can you please install the current video driver? According to ATI's website, it can be found at http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_cat...
Thanks!

Dan Cory replied on September 22, 2008 16:59 to the question "Recommended economy graphics cards" in Microsoft Live Labs:
We don't make specific recommendations, but any commerically available add-in graphics card should be fine. You can check that it is sold as supporting DirectX9. For best Photosynth experience, it should support Pixel Shader 2.0.
We are investigating support for the VIA/S3 Unichrome IGP, but can't promise anything yet.
Dan Cory replied on September 19, 2008 20:30 to the question "required number of texture blend stages (4) not supported" in Microsoft Live Labs:
We found another group of cards that don't work:
nVidia TNT
nVidia TNT2
nVidia TNT2 M64
nVidia TNT2 Pro
nVidia Vanta
nVidia GeForce2 Go
nVidia GeForce2 Ti
nVidia GeForce2 Ultra
SIS 315
SIS 30x/630/540/730
Kyro Prophet 4500
S3 ViperII Z200
3dLabs Wildcat VP870
SIS Xabre
These video cards will cause Photosynth to crash, unfortunately.
Dan replied on September 02, 2008 16:58 to the question "Does the Photosynth viewer utilise DirectX?" in Microsoft Live Labs:
Yes, Photosynth uses DirectX 9. This version is included in the operating systems Photosynth supports, so you shouldn't need to install DirectX specifically. However, we've also found many users have a better experience if they update their video drivers using Windows Update, or direct from their manufacturer. This updates the video card's implementation of DirectX and helps Photosynth run better.
