A comment on the update "US Bank automatic synchronization disabled" in Buxfer:
Thanks! Has the original issue been fixed, i.e. will Buxfer store security question answers or take other measures to avoid repeated login failures that lock users of automatic nightly syncs out of their accounts? – danep, on September 30, 2009 19:10

This is a consequence of this other issue:

In a nutshell, because Buxfer couldn't store security question answers some of us were getting locked out of our bank accounts. As inconvenient as it is not to be able to sync, it's better than getting locked out of your account every few days! :)
Maybe a compromise would be to allow manually syncs and just disable nightly syncs? I doubt this would be as likely to cause lockouts.

Thanks for the swift reply, I look forward to hearing more about this (I don't think this is the only thread on the issue) – danep, on September 01, 2009 04:11
danep reported a problem in Buxfer on September 01, 2009 02:23:
Buxfer cannot sync with US Bank and locks me out of my US Bank accountBuxfer fails to sync with my US Bank credit card account every night because US Bank recently instituted mandatory security questions, and Buxfer apparently cannot store the answers or work around this. As a result, after three consecutive nights of failed log-in attempts, US Bank locks my online banking account! In the short-term, I am working around this by choosing to not sync the account nightly, but this is a critical problem that needs to be addressed (even just disabling nightly syncs for US Bank customers would be a good short-term solution), as it leads to so much trouble even outside of Buxfer.
A comment on the problem "Media key global hotkeys should use different event api (WinXP)" in Songbird:
This is my worry - I switched to Songbird because it seemed to have so much potential, and I want it to become popular, but I don't know how long I can stick with it when it lacks such basic features :( – danep, on August 17, 2009 20:45

Easy way to see month-to-date spending surplusIt would be great to be able to see how much money is available to spend in a budget category, pro-rated to the day of the month. Example: if I have a budget of $30, it's the 15th of the month, and I've spent $10 so far, it would be nice to know that I can spend $5 before I go "over budget".
danep replied on June 25, 2009 18:34 to the question "Tagging schemes" in Buxfer:
I've given it a little more thought, and basically I think that you should be able to organize and categorize transactions under 6 different taxonomies: who, what, when, where, why, and how.
Who (who payed / among whom should the bill be split), when (what date did the transaction post), and how (what account did the money come from) are already covered. The problem is that what, where, and why can only be accommodated by (and hence are all lumped together) under tags. For instance, imagine that I buy a textbook from Amazon. Looking at reports at the end of the month, it might be useful to see:
- All purchases from Amazon, regardless of whether they are books (where)
- All book purchases, regardless of whether they are for school or for pleasure (what)
- All school-related purchases, books and otherwise (why)
There's simply no way to see all three of these reports using the current system.

Close accounts without deleting themIt would be great if you could close an account without necessarily deleting it. I just closed a checking account, and I don't want it to appear in my "accounts" overview, but I also don't want to lose all of my transactions!
